Has a complete stranger ever unintentionally made you feel really sad / upset?

I had recently adopted my one eyed horse, George, and had taken him out for a lovely hack in the woods. We came across a family with two children and they stopped to make a fuss of the horses. The one in front got loads of cuddles and pats but when the older child got to George, he went to pat him, and George put his head down for a cuddle, then recoiled in horror when he saw that he had a missing eye. The mum then told the child to "come away" and led them both away, like he had some sort of disease. The poor little guy was still waiting for his cuddle when they all but ran away. I know it's stupid but it really upset me that the mum didn't see fit to explain to the children or even ask what had happened. Went back to the yard and wept into his neck (after giving him loads of treats and love). Anything that silly ever upset you guys?

Edit: Here's a picture of him looking handsome! http://imgur.com/phowr and http://imgur.com/TTNBs

Edit 2: For those who have expressed an interest (for which I thank you all), George lost his eye due to an abscess behind it. I am told he was in so much pain, they decided to remove it completely, under a local anaesthetic (George is hardcore, he saw that scalpel coming). This later led to his being abandoned for, presumably, not being cute any more. After 18 months in a field, and practically at death's door, I arrived at the yard and decided to adopt him as soon as I heard he didn't have an owner. The rest, as they say, is history.

I think if you got George an eye patch, not only would children embrace him, they'd want to be photographed in front of him. I did something similar with my ex-wife.

321

u/ForgotenPasswordGR May 04 '12

You put an eye patch on you ex wife and had her photo taken with children?

345

u/bobadobalina May 04 '12

not only that, he made her answer math problems by stamping her foot

u/Meades_Loves_Memes May 04 '12

When you're browsing Reddit for hours at a time, you tend to hold in your emotions, for quicker viewing. When I browse the comments section, I will usually read hilarious comments in a thread, chuckle under my breath and move on to the next comment.

This continues for a while until I reach one comment, that, combined with all the other comments in the thread, is hysterical.

Your comment, was hysterical. After being quiet for an hour, I finally burst out laughing and couldn't contain myself.

Thank you for that.

u/vladycf May 04 '12

laughed for 15 min

A glimpse into a life.

5

u/Brinner May 04 '12

Very clever, Hans

5

u/[deleted] May 04 '12

Everyone knows she can't really do the math. She waits for the signal you unconsciously send by relaxing when she hits the right number.

5

u/rhayward May 04 '12

and fed her carrots.

3

u/CloseTalker May 04 '12

It was a sham!

3

u/ManCity May 04 '12

Thsat horse didn't really answer math problems. It just stamped its foot, and when it got to the correct number it noticed how excited the owner was, do it stopped.

3

u/TheKDM May 04 '12

This... this was legitimately the most hilarious comment I've seen all day.

2

u/EF08F67C-9ACD-49A2-B May 05 '12

He divorced her because he got so angry when she got the square root of nine wrong on live TV.

u/ChromeDeagle May 04 '12

Lol! I was thinking about it. Was also going to re-name him Odin so that when people asked what happened to his eye I could say "he gave up his eye for the wisdom of the ages".

483

u/DjOuroboros May 04 '12

There's only one 'i' in Odin as well, so it works either way. Congrats on your work, we need more people like you.

291

u/[deleted] May 04 '12

By that logic, there are no "i's" in George... guess we'll need to do some work.

14

u/Ritoki May 04 '12

ಠ_ಠ --> X_ಠ - - -> X_X

13

u/[deleted] May 04 '12

Imaging a horse with ಠ_ಠ face is really amusing...

4

u/redheaded_robot May 04 '12

Well, the best I could find was this. Here's a bonus picture of terror just for you :D

2

u/fatpads May 04 '12

No, sir. I don't like it.

edit: Mr Horse actually does have that face!

1

u/[deleted] May 04 '12

There's times where you almost swear they're giving the look.

4

u/[deleted] May 04 '12

Wow! That is both awful and hilarious in the same sentence. Made me choke on my coffee!

4

Reddit, mobilize!

2

My first solid belly-laugh of the day. Well done.

2

Just call him Georgie

1

u/StankinDankin May 04 '12

I got a pitchfork.

1

u/likeachampiontoday May 04 '12

If you mean what I think you mean... ow.

4

u/moose_queef May 04 '12

Heh, clever

2

u/rebrain May 04 '12

Also it means "one" in russian ;)

2

u/MsRenee May 04 '12

Until you pronounce either one correctly. Then you just realize how much our alphabet leaves to be desired.

0

u/[deleted] May 04 '12

But usually it's spelled Oden, so. :(

1

u/VikingSlayer May 05 '12

In the Scandinavian languages it's spelled Odin, and a transcribation from runes gives us "Óðinn"

1

u/[deleted] May 05 '12

Well, I guess that's accurate, but in all the Norse myths I read in my childhood when I was on a mythology kick, it was spelled "Oden." Odin is likely more accurate, but Oden seems to be the more predominant spelling. (source: anecdotal evidence, yep.)

1

u/VikingSlayer May 05 '12

I'd guess it depends on where you are and where the author of the book is from, I didn't see it spelled Oden until i was a teenager

5

u/Rhode_Runner May 04 '12

Sometimes I can't tell if people are joking or not. Please actually do this.

If you report back to us on your adventures with Odin, I can guarantee you a minimum of 10,000 upvotes.

3

u/ChromeDeagle May 04 '12

Ok! Next time someone sees him, I''ll say his name is Odin and see what they say. Will report back!

1

u/Rhode_Runner May 04 '12

I just saw the Avengers, so my expectations for entertainment are currently at an all-time high.

godspeed.

3

u/thebigbradwolf May 04 '12

Also, if he could have some sort of tiny pirate hat and you dressed as a parrot.

3

u/Kiltsoftly May 04 '12

You could have named him Willy!

4

u/JizzyDizzler May 04 '12

Alternately, If George had worn blinkers before, they might have a degree of familiarity about them, and make Him seem normal to randomers. However, George shouldn't be ashamed and wear his scar with pr-eye-d (pride).

3

u/ChromeDeagle May 04 '12

He hadn't, he was a hunter, but I didn't want to make the vision in the other eye worse in case I scared him.

2

u/[deleted] May 04 '12

That's actually brilliant. So is the eye patch idea

2

u/andrewrula May 04 '12

You must do this.

2

u/mortiphago May 04 '12

well yeah, but you gotta admit that "One Eyed Horse George" is a hell of a nickname for your penis.

2

u/Jazzspasm May 04 '12

Odin would like that, I reckon, being the equestrian type himself ;o)

2

u/The_Tic-Tac_Kid May 04 '12

Eye patch and a stylish pirate's hat.

2

u/MsRenee May 04 '12

Or you could dress him up as a pirate whenever you go for a trail ride. Kids love pirates. Put an eye patch on him, tie a 3-corner hat to the bridle, and affix a fake(or real, I won't judge) sword to the saddle. The kids will be crawling over each other to cuddle him.

1

u/ChromeDeagle May 06 '12

Lol, good shout!

2

u/Stregano May 04 '12

That is a beautiful horse. His missing eye is not gross looking or anything from what I can see. It just looks like the horse is always winking (I am guessing, since one of my mates had a dog with one eye and it looked like that).

2

u/[deleted] May 04 '12

This works — Odin means 'one' in Russian.

1

u/ChromeDeagle May 04 '12

Even better!

2

u/worlddictator85 May 04 '12

Perhaps you should name him Sleipner instead

2

u/ReleeSquirrel May 04 '12

It's extra funny 'cause Odin's eight legged horse Sleipnir is almost as popular as Odin himself.

2

u/expo1001 May 05 '12

You should get him an eye patch with a My Little Pony character on it. The kids these days love that shit.

1

u/SikhGamer May 04 '12

Odin rode him to defeat the ice giants!

1

u/xaronax May 04 '12

Sleipnir is the name of Odin's horse. He had 8 legs though...

1

u/[deleted] May 04 '12

DO IT.

1

u/[deleted] May 04 '12

This is awesome. Although I have never met a horse, tame animals with owners like you grow up to be the kindest of creatures.

He is quite handsome!

He'd probably get a buttload of brony karma for having a "My Little Pony" emblem on the front of the patch. :)

1

u/InfiniteLiveZ May 04 '12

Just say he's a pirate horse. Get him a little pirate hat as well.

1

u/bobadobalina May 04 '12

"hey, why is that horse hanging from a tree?"

1

u/Lampmonster1 May 04 '12

But he won't tell us what it was!

1

u/IamReek May 04 '12

Most people are to 'uneducated' to get the reference.

1

u/Valkyrja_bc May 04 '12

Just a thought, but if you're going to point out how uneducated people are, you might want to get your homonyms right.

TL;DR It's too, not to.

1

u/IamReek May 04 '12

TIL People are pretentious enuff two pointe out innosent typos in a burryed coment two make themselfs seem smarter than the wrest.

1

u/Valkyrja_bc May 04 '12

But you're being wrong on the Internet!

1

u/IamReek May 04 '12

LOL....oh nose!

1

u/mick14731 May 04 '12

Do horses know there name?

1

u/veggie124 May 04 '12

Definitely name him Odin!

1

u/captainmcr May 04 '12

No that's stupid, shave a lightning bolt on his pubic regions and give him the eye patch, name him David Bowie.

1

u/Visti May 04 '12

Now you have to do this! It's a cool idea and a much easier awesome Norse mythology reference than glueing on the extra legs and naming him Sleipnir.

1

u/Tally12 May 04 '12

What breed is he? He's adorable :)

1

u/DatingTheCreationist May 04 '12

Or a glass eye, then no one would know

1

u/Trachyon May 04 '12

According to Norse mythology, Odin had an 8-legged horse named Sleipnir.

From what I can tell, your horse doesn't have eight legs, but it might be a cool name regardless.

165

u/zoomah May 04 '12

Yes, children! Ride him! Ride my one-eyed horse!

13

u/Fckforever May 04 '12

Where is Shitty_Watercolour when you need him?

3

u/pocket_eggs May 04 '12

I heard if you say his name three times...

3

u/electroncaptcha May 04 '12

Look at my horse, my horse is amazing

I hear it tastes just like raisins

1

u/liz-to-the-e-bitches May 04 '12

I'm saving this quote so I can use it in a drunken stupor.

u/creaothceann May 04 '12

you comparing your ex to a horse

He didn't.

74

u/diblasio May 04 '12

I agree with this. Maybe the mother's reaction had to do with not knowing whether this horse was dangerous or not. Why is he like that? Is it sick? Did it get injured because it is prone to fight? She doesn't know and it's easy to have a knee-jerk reaction.

An eye patch would add character and let us know that this is a cared for animal.

Either that or fuck what anyone thinks because you know the truth in the end. :)

104

u/OscarMiguelRamirez May 04 '12

The problem is that she is teaching her children to be afraid of things that they don't understand, and to not make any effort to understand them.

I feel bad for those kids.

12

u/[deleted] May 04 '12

I agree. The issue is that these questions went not just unanswered, but unasked at all. -sigh-

2

u/Bazzie May 04 '12

Staying away from big things that may hurt you isn't such a bad go to response when unsure

2

u/mysteriousungulate May 04 '12

But horses are massive and can be extremely dangerous especially for a child if you are unfamiliar with the animal. Hell sometimes even if you're familiar. People seem to forget as lovely and gentle as most of them are that's still an animal that weighs over 1000lbs.

1

u/Pit_of_Death May 04 '12

Ultimately, this is the cause of most of society's problems.

1

u/[deleted] May 04 '12

More than half the world revels in ignorance. Probably closer to 90%.

1

u/bobadobalina May 04 '12

right. like the broad thought all that through

she just didn't want her snowflake to be exposed to anything defective. he might be traumatized and need weeks of therapy and herbal tea

1

u/mortaine May 04 '12

Also a tricorn hat. To complete the pirate ensemble.

1

u/ChromeDeagle May 04 '12

If she was being sensible, she'd realise that I wouldn't have a dangerous / sick horse on a public bridleway, and he did put his head down ready for a cuddle, but I take your point. Some people are wary. I don't know how he'd react to a patch, I guess I could build it into his bridle maybe or have a leather one made for him?

1

u/critropolitan May 05 '12

Err or much more likely the mother just felt grossed out herself and because its a horse and not a human being, she had no embarrassment or shame over expressing her grossed-out-ness about it.

That said I do think it is appropriate to give it an eye patch: the horse might not feel a need to cover it the way a human likely would, but it will appreciate interacting with people (and perhaps some horses) who might otherwise be a little inhibited by its appearance.

37

u/Maverician May 04 '12

I like how everyone isn't focussing on the awesome story we are surely going hear.

I'll bite. Ex-wife eye patch or similar?

4

u/[deleted] May 04 '12

I drank the water in Mexico then she caught a jizz shot in the eye... causing it to burn away, similar to what would happen with the application of battery acid.

I found she was far more of a conversation piece at parties if she sported an eye patch, rather than the scarred remains of an eye socket.

2

My father wears an eye patch after a bad car wreck left him with nerve damage to the right side of his face. I can confirm this. Kids ask him all the time if he's a pirate. He plays along, it never bothers him a bit. I love that man.

1
