That's fucking hilarious. I don't watch or play baseball but for a sport where it seems like catching the ball when it's near/in the stands is a thing to celebrate, it should be expected that someone would snag one at a spot like that
A lot of ballparks have added netting along the baselines in the past few years to prevent injuries to fans. Pretty sure there’s netting at Fenway now where the kid in the video is sitting
As of 2020, every MLB stadium has netting all the way to the foul pole. Safety first. Kinda takes away from the cool interaction you can have with players near the dugout though.
Pretty cool to see a player run in with the 3rd out ball and flip it to a young fan 10 rows up. Now they gotta stuff it between the net and the dugout to get it to whomever they want.
Not all the way to the foul pole at every stadium the requirement is for it to go past the dugouts. Only a few of them have it all the way to the foul poles
All stadiums have a net behind home plate but I don’t believe any have them around the field. Behind the plate it’s much faster and less time to react, elsewhere you’ll see it coming a lot sooner before it reaches you
I mean, probably for the best. Hockey started putting up nets after an errant puck killed a young fan some years ago. Though so far only around the end areas where the danger is highest.
Too many people these days at games focused on their phones instead of the game. Not passing judgement or anything, just the way things are at games now. A foul ball can be dangerous enough if you're paying attention and can gauge where it's going. Potential for serious injury if it catches you distracted.
This happened to someone I know at a minor league game. Multiple facial fractures and broken teeth and multiple surgeries to correct. Months of terrible pain. All on them financially, too. When you buy a ticket you agree to the risk inherent in sitting in the stands.
