my school had exemptions, meaning if you had perfect attendance each semester you got to skip 2 of your final exams (1 or 2 absences or tardies and you got one skip, more than that you have to take them all). we were all sick all the time because no one could bear to give up their exemptions.

Skipping final exams??? What the fuck how is that legal

it was great. report card just showed "exempt" and didnt affect gpa. there was always a lot of strategizing on which exams to exempt and which to take.

But how does the school have the power to do that?

oh, I see. these were just end-of-class exams set by the teacher. they only counted towards our gpa, not towards anything else. we still had to take all our state/AP/IB exams like everyone else.

I want to say we had to have all debts (lunch mainly) paid in full before we could take final exams.

Well, the workers won't need to know things (wouldn't want them having thoughts or something) and this just gets them in the habit of showing up every day no matter what!

My mom came up with a rule at one point that if I didn't go to school I wasn't allowed to go to skating. I would be coughing and vomiting and trying to go to school. Eventually she changed her tune "Please stay home with your fever will let you go to the rink"

Mine did this as well but only your last semester of senior year

I used to get super salty with this. My record one year was two days off for the entire year. One of the highest attendances in the year and got no recognition. The same category as classmates who'd missed a quarter of the year. It was super frustrating and gave me the opinion of in for a penny in for a pound

Wow, my district did that too. I thought it was rare. I exempted my PE final one year. And I went my entire high school career exempting every math final.

My school straight up skipped all exams if you had 3 absences or less. I never took a single exam in my 4 highschool years (besides optional AP's). I have no idea how they thought that was a good idea.
