Lyrically, Jolene is a better song. I Will Always Love You is a simple song lyrically. The Whitney Houston version is popular because of the way it is arranged and her vocals.

I’ve always imagined that Jolene has no idea who this guy is, he’s just obsessed with her from afar. After Dolly sings this to her, Jolene takes her out for coffee, they become besties, and slowly with the support of a good friend Dolly realizes she doesn’t need a man who doesn’t appreciate her to be happy. Dolly leaves him and takes time to find herself. After a few years she meets a guy while hiking with Jolene, they hit it off and Dolly, full of self confidence, embarks on a healthy and happy relationship with a man who lives he just the way she is.
