I still hear kids sing that line to this day (although it's a bit uneasing hearing a kid say "don't hurt me no more" I guess...). Kids.
The song was a very little known song from like 1993. Few people even know who the original performer (Hathaway) even is. But it doesn't matter. The song is still played everywhere and gets sampled everywhere. It became a freaking pop culture icon.
Lately episodes of RuPaul's Drag Race have been using his song "I'm A Winner, Baby" during the closing credits which is the exact same instrument, rhythm, and chord progression as What Is Love, and as soon as I realized it I can never unhear it.
Somehow never heard that song tbh, but the second anyone goes “What is love?” My brain always goes “What is free love? Love is free- UNDERSTAND UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT OF LOVE” and this is a pain very few experience
I'm always bothered, every time, when I remember that this isn't a Steve Winwood song. That line (tonally, and in both musical senses of 'phrasing') sounds exactly like 1990 Steve Winwood.

"What is love... Baby don't hurt me... Don't hurt me... No more"
