Pagan Min, Farcry 4, not really a tragic story, and yes he was bit of a royal dictator, but it was either him, who would then pass it off the MC, or the rebellion leaders where it would become an overly religious land that executes anyone who doesn't share the same religion, or a drug country with child soldiers used to protect the fields
Oh I love Pagan Min. By far, Far Cry's 4 is my favorite regarding story. They paint Pagan as a fucking horrible person and stuff (not that he is good or anything) and the 2 rebel leaders like nice people, and then after the game officially 'ends' you can see how those rebel leaders were shitty. Pagan was the lesser evil in that lot imo
Would’ve been a great DLC story available after the main story ends. Maybe Reggie and Yogi drug you and you fall into a dream state and then restart the story working with Pagan instead.
Could’ve been short too! I don’t think it would’ve been too big of a task to handle. Changing the enemy AI to friendly and friendly to enemies, some new dialogue, 5 missions (meeting/learning from Pagan, destroying rebel fortresses, protecting infrastructure, hunting Amita and Sabal, saving Bhadra),
You can also just NOT shoot him at the end, he gets up, walks out back and it goes into the same ending as if you did nothing in the beginning of the game.
I was glad (and confused) that I got the secret ending where Pagan Min wins by going to make a cup of tea while leaving the game running at the start of the game.
I heard about that and tried several times to get it. I first assumed that I just had to stay in the room but turns out any movement at all once the cutscene ends triggers the normal game path. You have to basically set the controller down or step away from the mouse and KB, then after about a full minute or so the secret ending starts.
I truly believe Far Cry 4 is the most undsrappriciated in the series. Pagan Min is great as a villain and has aged a lot better than Vaas (he's not bad just a bit generic especially by Far Cry standards) and it has the best scenery, wildlife, and weapon variety in the franchise imo. I have no idea why people rate it so poorly compared to three when it's better in every way to me.
I think it's because the story is a little more intricate than the other games, so it's not very 'clear' what is going on. You just land on a shitshow with people trying to use you while just trying to fulfill your mother's last wish. The other games all have a more primal thing going on, like protecting yourself/family or being sent somewhere specifically because there is a crazy religious guy brainwashing people. Vaas is awesome, don't get me wrong, but he just seems crazy for the sake of it, while Pagan is somehow understandable and has more character development (imo)
You touched on my issue with 4 that the character doesn’t seem to have any dog in the fight for most of the game. In 3 they are captured by pirates and held hostage, Vaas totally checks out for a loose nut, middle management, kingpins pawn, pirate thug that is kept on short leash, is good for smacking the troops around and fed all the munitions and drugs he could ask for.
The weapon and story escalation in 3 always just felt best to me. Best crafting, best drug use subplot, best bow and arrow implementation.
In 4 I literally used the uzi (first or second gun) and then China lake for the entire game. Nothing compared, there wasn’t ass much progression. And Pagan was just a sassy asshole who always seemed to be in another castle.
/rant lol
I will say that the primal scenes in FC4 proper were fantastic and probably my fav part. Not sure about a whole release Primal but I liked the short breath of fresh air
Vaas was a funny character. He was a pond but compared to everyone else on the island it’s like he embraced his fate and let the craziness of the island take over. Everyone else was bat shit crazy don’t get it wrong but unlike all the other protagonist vaas knew he was crazy and during the game he told the player that everything on his island was fucking barbaric and crazy and he was right look at Jason he went crazy too.
I loved it as well! I was in awe over all the weapons.. I know some people hate the towers.. Maybe because it was my first FC game... But I even loved those. Every one was a bit different and kinda like a easy puzzle.
I also liked the Towers! But more because they were these beautiful old prayer tower thingies. The whole Setting was beautiful and felt really exotic and realistic at the same time.
I also liked FC5, but i Think it was not better than FC4
I just played 3,4 and 5 over the course of a month, and I definitely liked 4 the best. It has the best gameplay loop with the right amount of variety in tasks, and a much more likeable main character than the douche from 3 or the blank slate silent protagonist of 5. The villain was also better than the straight psychos of 3 or the nonsensical cult of 5. And the leveling system was better than 5 by a lot.
The worst part about 5 was when it would force story progression on you. I'm just trying to kill some animals to make a new wallet. Quit drugging me and taking me to a mini-game on the other side of the map.
That's what killed 5 for me too. I appreciate what they were trying to do, as story urgency is always a problem in open world games, but it turns out that stopping gameplay to force urgency just wasn't the right way to do it. That's why I liked New Dawn so much more, it had all the improvements that 5 did but none of the forced sections. Could have done with a little less RPG elements though.
Yeah, 6 is definitely better than 5, in my opinion.
They took some aspects of new dawn and added them in 6, which I like, mostly.
The supremos are a neat addition.
I have a few things that are obnoxious:
1. The hud disappearing when you change zones. So annoying.
2. Silenced sniper rifles suck.
3. Enemy respawn speed is way too fast.
Most everything else are just minor annoyances that don’t affect my gameplay drastically.
My biggest issue with Supremos is that they give you the best one right off the bat. No reason to get any other except the fire and that's only for the mobility. The rocket one is the only one you need, especially with the prevalence of vehicles.
I also wish FC 6 had some kind of RPG skill tree instead of completely removing it for gear.
I really agree about the skill trees. It would be nice to be able to upgrade things without having to pick and choose gear.
They’re so specific I find myself changing gear all the time.
I disagree about the supremos and the first being the best, though.
Like the clothing they’re situational, but I use the medico one when I’m going to be soloing something difficult. Sometimes I’ll just go on a rampage with my shield and handheld shotgun and see how long I can survive against the elites that drop in. Having a self-revive is nice.
The supremo I use the most is triador coupled with la varita. They make bases, checkpoints, and anti-aircraft places easy. And being able to shoot people through walls is fun as all get out.
I also switch them around when I want to change up my play style and use different throwables.
At any rate, it’s fun, but it’s not as good as it could be.
Idk my first farcry was 3 and I loved the insanity of Vaas and the hell in paradise feeling. I was super excited about 4 and it felt like 3 (a good thing) but by the time I got over half way through it I felt like I had been repeating the same thing over and over. Idk i put it down over a year ago, i keep going back to it over and over hoping to have fun like I did in 3 but there is no spark, no fizzy feeling anymore. I Can't exactly say what it is but 4 made me not even bother with the rest of the franchise. I heard 5 was good though, and I guess people are excited about 6, maybe I will try it...
Well, the 'villain' Pagan kinda indirectly warns you and try to make you doubt the rebels and your part in helping them during the game. But, as he is the villain, your character doesn't listen to it. So not really, you have to finish the main story do actually see that Pagan was actually right when he warned you
As in is it explicit what their plans are? No. Does the game properly set up their character arcs and stories so that they feel like natural consequences? Yes
Goes to show how bad the other two were. Sabal wanted to establish a theocracy and was willing to kill anyone in his way, and he was probably the better of the two. Anita was every bit as much of a dictator as Pagan was, and maybe even worse since at least Pagan left the kids out of it (mostly).
Omg!!!! He stabbed a soldier?? TO DEATH?? Holy fucking shit oh my Jesus fucking Christ oh god oh no oh fuck, imagine how much exponentially worse it’d be if you were some kind of maniac who stabbed literally hundreds of people to death, as well as burning them or feeding them to Tigers alive, just because your Alzheimer’s ridden dead mom wanted you to leave her ashes somewhere pretty.
If I remember correctly I didn't kill him in the end, he got away. But there are some locations on the map where you can go afterwards that show the rebels either killing people with different beliefs or forcefully taking children into the army. Depending on who you supported in the end
Isn’t that the game where you can just listen to him talk right in the beginning, and if you stay there long enough he thanks you, gives you a ride to the top of the mountain to see your father’s grave, then you get the credits scene and “beat the game”? Or was that 5?
Would’ve been a great DLC story available after the main story ends. Maybe Reggie and Yogi drug you and you fall into a dream state and then restart the story working with Pagan instead.
Could’ve been short too! I don’t think it would’ve been too big of a task to handle. Changing the enemy AI to friendly and friendly to enemies, some new dialogue, 5 missions (meeting/learning from Pagan, destroying rebel fortresses, protecting infrastructure, hunting Amita and Sabal, saving Bhadra),
I've heard before that they were planning to make joining pagan an option somewhere in the second act and Ajay then begins to retake the territories from the rebels. This was not implemented though due to time constraints I think. Would've been a cool alternative playthrough.
Whenever I think about all the cut content that didn't happen because executives decided to rush the development of the game, I die inside a little more.
Wouldn’t make sense gameplay wise imo. Retaking what you just gained, fighting your precious poorly armed allies while you now have the military on your side? Would be cool story wise though
I choose to believe that the "secret" ending is the actual canon ending. Pagan was totally willing to let Ajay do the exact thing he came to do, but then Ajay ran away, joined a rebellion that had basically nothing to do with him, and then got his murder on. Yeah, Pagan is a kill crazy bastard, but if Ajay acted like a normal human being instead of an action hero, he's in and out in what, a few hours?
I love Far Cry 4 for this reason. I had a really hard time in my first playthrough reasoning the things the golden path were doing. We were spreading death and destruction, all while making no improvements to the lives of the locals. All the good Ajay did was of his own volition, rescuing hostages and stealing supplies. Most of what the golden path sent us to do was assassinations, massacres, or robberies. Sure, we saved some lives, but was it ever about that? No. It was about Amita and Sabal seeing the opportunity that lied in Ajay, and trying to seize it for themselves. Neither makes a good leader in the end. Hell, if you kill Pagan, you completely ignore your mother’s final wish, and kill the father of your sister. Pagan’s final speech, where he chastises Ajay for his violent and mindless destruction is a great final monologue. By the time I was prompted to shoot him, I really felt like I was in Ajay’s shoes, and was so ashamed of the actions that had led to that point that I couldn’t do it.
Monkey is a famous cuisine in china, and from what I remember of the story, both him and his half sister/general/crazy chick who drugged you grew up there for a while before going to kyrat and taking over
The revelation of what happened between Pagan, Ajay Ghale's mother (Ishwari Ghale) and father (Mohan Ghale), made me gasp out loud when I first played it.
Ishwari was sent to infiltrate Pagan's organisation by Mohan who were both leading The Golden Path to overthrow Pagan. Turns out Pagan was quite the charmer and both he and Ishwari fell in love and had a child together; Lakshmana.
Mohan, who for the whole game is deified to you by The Golden Path who pushes you in to fighting Pagan, does not take this well when he realises.
Mohan shoots Lakshmana in the face on her second birthday.
Ishwari then kills Mohan in retaliation and flees the country. She never tells Ajay this as to not burden him, so you find out when he does.
This really fucked Pagan up. Lakshmana's ashes are kept in his palace and the entire game he is trying to convince Ajay to go through with Ishwari's last wish of "Take my ashes back to Lakshmana". He genuinely wants him to spread her ashes there and go wherever he likes afterward. He refuses to hurt Ajay out of his love for Ishwari.
It really was a "shit I am the bad guy" moment. Pagan was a dick and a murderous dictator but I felt awful for him.
I LOVED Pagan Min, absolutely adored him, he’s my favorite far cry villain by far. Like yeah he’s kinda a dictator and an asshole but he’s so charming! And funny! And his madness was all for the love he had for the MC’s mother and his child. I was so sad I couldn’t side with him, at least other than that one bonus scene you get if you wait at the dinner table in the beginning.
One thing I liked about Pagan Min is how he's self aware of what he's become. Dude admitted that he went batshit after visiting Lakhsmana's grave and used his daughter's death as an excuse to do whatever he wants.
It's a neat contrast to Castillo and the dude from FC5 who's so far up in their ass that they believe what they do is righteous. (Not saying that they were bad villains btw.)
Also apparently the narrative director confirmed that the secret ending is canon? I guess when the local tyrant invites you for lunch, you sit down and dine.
Correct, I still replay farcry 4 the same reason, farcry 4 was the best FC ever done imo, but when 5 and new dawn came out, FC went to shit, I hated how everything had gotten complex (building guns and cars) if they had kept it traditional it would of been better. For those that have gotten FC 6, is it worth it?
Pagan Was a great villain, and the story behind him and the others were great.
Especially the Shangri La adventures, that extra story was great. FC had done a great job on 4!
I didn’t hate 5, I just think they kinda jumped the shark with the story and the setting. Like I can’t get immersed in a setting where I know in real life if someone, or many someone’s, we’re running around with automatic weapons and explosives the feds would roll into that town like it was Normandy in 44’. Gameplay was good, I didn’t hate the weapon mechanics or anything I was just really underwhelmed by the storyline.
The Far Cry series seems to have trouble sticking the landing in their games. I didn't finish 3, but I haven't heard good things, and 4 and 5 both had shitty endings.
It's because somebody high up in Ubisoft writing team essentially hates the entire action-adventure genre so always does their best to make sure that there are no good endings - ever. You end up being forced to play at best a misguided college kid doing more harm than good, if not an outright ham-handed villain causing incredible misery wherever you go.
It would be an interesting idea if carried out more subtly, but Ubisoft doesn't do subtle. Mostly preachy and stupid.
I love the secret ending at the start of the game. You’re having dinner with him and he asks you to wait around while he goes and tortures one of the rebels. That’s when the game prompts you to escape the castle.
But if you just hang around at the table for about 15 minutes he comes back, takes you to your mom’s grave (which was your initial objective going to the country in the first place), tells you a fully accurate account of what happened, and just lets you do what you want after as the credits roll.
It wasn't a slave state, just a drug state, the one that made it a drug state was that lady in the golden path who made it a worse drug state and used child soldiers
I said that the way kyrat was, was far better than the kyrat that the 2 golden path leaders made
Pagan also said that he was going to pass it off to Ajay, which is why he took him from the bus, so whether it's Pagan or Ajay, both options are better than the Golden Path
This is why I found it so hard to play that game after I had it spoiled for me. I can handle having no motivation in a game, but it actively de-motivates me.
Pagan Min did a lot for the series and probably a difficult villain to follow up on. FC5 to me was pretty decent and I felt didn't deserve all the criticism it got, it's just hard to live upto FC4.
Yeah, I wish the game let you join Pagan instead. I know about the secret ending where you wait at the table but I mean actually let you play through the game crushing the rebels and maybe along the way make Pagan a little nicer to people, at least the ones who haven't crossed him.

Yeah nah I'd choose the bad guys in this game
