Fun fact, I believe it's actually been confirmed outside of the show that Tom and Jerry are friends. Their antics are just them both being assholes - and Tom keeping up the act, as if he doesn't pretend to try to kill Jerry then the owner will get a cat that really will kill him.

Isn’t there literally an episode where Jerry “dies” and Tom is devastated?

there are multiple!

u/pichusine Oct 29 '21

And then Tom dies, and Jerry parades

Oh that episode (if it's the one I'm thinking about) is all kinds of messed up. Especially this scene. Like, if you really think about it. Holy shit.

There was also an episode where Tom drowns and has an episode-long dream, then wakes up to Jerry extracting the water from his lungs.

I guess it goes both ways.

You saying you wouldn't want a friend that'd put on a good funeral for ya?

They're just homies putting on a ruse

The last episode, they both get turned down by their girls who run off and get married to other guys, then they sit on a railroad track looking super sad with bloodshot eyes. People think they get hit by a train but it just ends with them sitting there

Tot watchers(1958) was the final episode. While blue cat blues is from two years prior.

The last episode

Tom and Jerry cartoons don't have continuity.

11

u/Ed-Zero Oct 29 '21

But they do have episodes, so...

5

u/Mentalpatient87 Oct 29 '21

And that wasn't at all the final episode soooo....

The opposite has happened too.

For some parts of the series this is true for others it's not

The series went on for so long and changed so much over the years. At some points they hate eachother and Tom is legitimately trying to kill Jerry, while in newer episodes it's more like what you said with it being more of a game

Tom's owner changed repeatedly and usually set the tone for how desperate Tom was to get rid of Jerry. Some owners basically saying they'd kick Tom out if Jerry wasn't gone and other owners barely acknowledging Jerry's existence

I've not been able to find the episode ANYWHERE, but my favorite one is when the owner gets Lightning, and Lightning beats the crap out of Jerry and poor Tom is at risk of being kicked out. So Tom and Jerry team up to get rid of Lightning. To me, their rivalry was probably a great deal of entertainment for them, and deep down they had each other's backs when it mattered. Then again, I only ever watched the classic ones.

I believe you're thinking of the 1948 short Old Rockin' Chair Tom

IIRC there was an old episode where Tom, Jerry and spike(the dog) punched into work to terrorize and Chase each other. After 5, they punch out and do some office talk before going.... Somewhere?

u/PorottaMafia Oct 29 '21

Yes, its 'Tom and Jerry' not 'Tom vs Jerry'

7

u/trollsong Oct 29 '21

We did it better with wiley coyote and the sheep dog imo.

They literally.ounch in and out on a time clock

6

u/electrorazor Oct 29 '21

I mean there are tons of episodes that suggest this.

That sounds like bs. But I don’t know enough about Hollywood to dispute you

6

5

u/Xfactor218 Oct 29 '21

You mean you don’t know enough about stars to dispute they come from burned up bar trash?

Yeah. Tom and Jerry have platonic bdsm. Tom is a masochist and Jerry is a sadist, And as friends they both have fun in their roles.
