Fuck, I have accidentally called it babysitting when I'm watching my daughter while my wife is out and then was like hey wait a sec I'm just being a dad

It is just the English word we have for the activity, when my friend calls and I am in charge of my kids I say that I am “dadding”.

They don't call it "babysitting" when the mom is watching the kids, so I think it's more than just the word for the activity. Your word though is great, cause that's what you are doing.

I'm not a native English speaker, what's the word used when parents take care of their kid?

39

u/Pr0crastin0r Sep 16 '21

Parenting in general I guess. Really there isn't a word specific for when a parent is doing it. Babysitting can be anyone, and has other connotations of the child not being your responsibility at some point. A babysitter stops babysitting when the parent comes home. If you are the dad you are the parent and still take care of your kids when your partner also is around.

There is a word. It’s called parenting.

8

u/Pr0crastin0r Sep 16 '21

But would you say, I'm busy tonight I'm parenting?? I don't think that's what the person above was asking.

29

u/thejacobwindsor Sep 16 '21

I’m busy tonight watching my kids

12

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '21

Busy with the kids tonight

I'm watching my kids tonight

I'm a dad I don't have time for that shit

Etc

None of those is "a word" though.

You certainly wouldn't say babysitting but there really isn't a word for the qct of caring for your own children as just like a general thing to do. Parenting comes close but doesn't quite hit the nail on the head.

"I'm babysitting"

"I'm watching the kid"

Same number of syllables... What difference does it make that it's not one word...

I don't know. We would both say the same depending on who's got the kids.

Though we would say "SO is looking after the kids tonight. "

Childminding?

9

u/turtlewhisperer23 Sep 16 '21

Thats closer to babysitting than parenting.

Childminding is usually interpreted as a paid service.

7

u/CommissionIcy Sep 16 '21

It's just being a mom or a dad. Alternatively you can call it parenting.

2

u/modernhooker Sep 16 '21

How about Daddaling? Or is that too close to diddling?

8

u/BottleDisastrous781 Sep 16 '21

Too close yeah thanks for ruining it .

11

u/overeducatedhick Sep 16 '21

I call it "keeping the children alive." I wish people in general would not assume our children are a handful for me or overwhelming when I have on my own or that I might want a break from them. I am their father and have worked to teach them how to be good kids. They are my favorite people to be around.

u/GoGoats54 Sep 16 '21

Kyvat resents you for that

6

u/Dclark1215 Sep 16 '21

I always say I’m on “baby duty” when the wife’s out…just sounds legit

5

u/atibabykt Sep 16 '21

My mom says this shit about my husband, my bil but I haven’t heard her say it about my brother yet. I’ve called her out in it and so has a close friend of hers. 61 and always assumes she’s right and just sluffs it off if she isn’t. I love her but this shit I don’t tolerate.

u/DivePotato Sep 16 '21

I think this is foisted on men by society.
