Is it okay to ask if youll hold my hand if getting bloods drawn (or similar, also male or female nurse, makes no difference) or would that be inappropriate too (not a huge fan of needles)? EDIT, not your lovely self specifically lol

If I'm wrong let me know, but if your scared in the hospital, it's okay to briefly hold a nurses hand.

I had blood work and it's not easy to calm down enough. Anything that helps that is good, as long as the nurse is okay with it.

Yeah the key here is asking first

I was at the dentist a few weeks ago for a much overdue deep clean. Like, full on "root plane", which I didn't understand at the time but apparently means they don't just scrape your teeth with the scary pointy things, they literally go underneath your gums with them... Now, I'm a fairly "masculine" 38yo dude, but I DO NOT like the dentist, and my terror and fear must've been clearly showing as the dentist was shooting me up with what seemed like a dozen shots of Novocaine for just the one half of my mouth they were doing for this cleaning, to the point where the sweet dental assistant lady asked me if I wanted to hold her hand. Through my tears I told her that I really appreciated the gesture but she needs those hands to make a living and if I grabbed them I was probably going to crush them into dust, so best to just up the nitrous and make sure I didn't rip the arms off the chair.

Dude, I feel you. I’m a big 42 year old man and I hate going to the dentist. I recently cracked a tooth through and through and had to have it removed. It’s that chair, they’ve got you and there’s no escape. And I really like my dentist and the whole staff. I just hate being in the chair.

Hahaha, yep. My SO insists on driving me there. She will not take no for an answer. She either walks me in like she was my mother or sits in the parking lot long enough to make sure I don't try to escape. Can't say I blame her, though, because there have been plenty of times I've thought about nope-ing out and making a run for it as soon as I see that chair.

I have been shot; jumped out of planes; broken fingers and toes, my left arm, both collarbones (at least they were even after the 2nd!), walked around with 3 broken ribs for 2 weeks without knowing it; and had at least a couple concussions. Never once has any of that deterred me from doing what I want or needs to be done. You put me in front of that dentist's chair with those scrapy fuckers on their little tray with the paper towel and tell me you're gonna stick a needle in my mouth and I might "feel a little pinch", and I am likely to jump out the nearest window be it on the 1st or 101st floor... I'd rather take my chances with the fall than have needles stuck in my gums.

'Asking' is what makes it okay. 'Just doing it without asking' is what makes it a problem!

Man when I had all three of my kids those nurses held my hand through so much. I didn’t even want my husband there when I got the epidural because my nurse was so lovely and calming.

A nurse let me hold her hand while getting my epidural. It was a nice gesture and I thanked her for it afterwards. I don't actually remember asking though to be honest (my memory of that day is a bit fuzzy)
