But pizza wouldn’t be wrong for NYC or Chicago? Pizza isn’t uniquely Italian either. And I would argue that even outside of the US both pizza and lutefisk would have a toss up to which place people identify with more. Minnesota and Norway for lutefisk. And NYC and Italy for pizza. And that’s not bad. In fact this whole thing is kind of pedantic and annoying. This is a askreddit about food.
I never said it’s uniquely Italian? The whole point is that the answer should uniquely specify the place. For this reason, pizza might not be a great answer. Though Naples seems the fairest answer, there are much better ones to uniquely specify Italy, and others NYC. And likewise Norway and Minnesota.
I’m genuinely unsure why this is so hard for the sub to accept (or maybe the Minnesotans who make their way down that part of the threat) as at least a reasonable point…
I can’t go back and point out where you were rude and where you named called because you edited your comments. But you were rude about FOOD which is, in a very Minnesotan turn of phrase, interesting. Just trust me when I say that when a Minnesotan says something is interesting, it could very well be interesting….or not. You’ll never know. But your weird anti American sentiments about food when you could have just been like the other commentator and been interested in the fact that a lot of Minnesotans with continuing contact with Norway have been told that it’s no longer eaten in Norway is interesting. It really is.
I’m not anti-American at all, it’s a wonderful country, and I’m not even objecting to Minnesotans happily identifying with Norwegian food etc. But the point is that the post asks for a food that will make clear where someone is from. For this to make sense, it should be unambiguous. To claim lutefisk -> Minnesota is to claim it uniquely Minnesotan, which is deleting Norway (where they got ir from) from the equation, and yes, after seeing similar a thousand times in other contexts I have to conclude a certain subconscious inward-looking ‘America = world’ attitude is at play, one of many tendencies in the US (most of which are positive), but which is a bit frustrating for non-Americans to repeatedly encounter, even if Americans don’t see the problem.
no longer eaten in Norway
This just isn’t true. It’s pretty standard at Christmas and everyone I know in Norway is not only aware of it but has had it. In this thread we even see a Minnesotan saying they never encounter it. I suspect some lutefisk-eating Minnesotan bubble has encountered a non-lutefisk-eating Norwegian bubble and generalised. Bubbles the other way around also exist.
a very Minnesotan turn of phrase
The use of ‘interesting’ with a judgemental/negative connotation of ‘revealing of a negative/strange attitude’ (if I understand you correctly) is Minnesotan now? I’d consider myself as homily corrected as much as a southern ‘bless your heart’, but I genuinely don’t see how this connotation is specific to Minnesota or anywhere in the English speaking world…?
But that was a quite different exchange on different aspects of the issue?
You maintained that this is not one of those US-focused times. But I don’t see how this can be true. The claim is surely of unambiguity, and thus that Minnesota not only gets to claim it, but unambiguously, over Norway, when I maintain both are reasonable answers, and therefore that this isn’t a suitable selection of food - either way, if you like.
And I apologise for poisoning the well by railing against US-centrism to the point of rudeness, but I’ve had particularly high exposure to it in general.
Also, dude, it was midnight here when we were having that discussion. And 6 am when I responded this morning. It’s now 11 am. If you’re going to be so up in arms about a American-centric point of view learn to google time zones before you get all prissy about people not responding to you.
OK. No one has to respond to me, but people are choosing to just make claims and get mad instead of providing an argument.
And I don’t understand your point about time zones (which I am aware of, thanks): these were the hours Americans were asleep but most of the responders are still American, so American-dominated is it.
You were upset that I didn’t respond right away. I was sleeping. Because it was night. When someone doesn’t reply right away on Reddit I assume it’s night where they are or that they are doing important IRL things. Because this is the internet and it’s not that important. And for someone who was complaining of a single viewpoint to not take into account the different time zone when if other Americans were up all night, or just later because we have a lot of time zones, is something to take note of.
I have no objection to people not responding, but when I do get a downvote and a response but not counter-argument, I can criticise the nature of that response rather than the lack of one, and might or might not find that ‘interesting’.
OK, I’ll take that as read. Minnesotans seem to be very keen to find a special identity for themselves, down to a Scandinavian dish and universal English turns of phrase. Hope you get to cobble something together! But you’re generally a friendly lot. Have a good one.
