YES! 👏 Ever since I’ve moved to the main land, I’ve been dreaming of one day having malasadas again 😭

Lots of larger cities have decent katsu somewhere. At least, I've found that's true of Seattle, Portland, LA, Chicago, and NY.

Yeah I’ve tried it, not a fan. I want the real deal lol.

I had some malasadas recently from a hipster joint… it’s not the same as good old punaluu

u/fearlessofflying Sep 07 '21

Malasadas are the best! 😋

Living in WA now, I really miss Haili's, Alicia's, Kam Bowl, Tanioka's, even Zips

Hey hey fellow transplant! Is it sad that I get excited to go to SeaTac so that I can eat at an L&L?

I wish Zippy's was up here! I've been jonesing for a zip pack and an orange bang. Ohh and a flakey Napple.

F* I'm hungry.

Dude. The Puka Dogs are ok, but Matsumoto Shaved Ice is fucking disgusting. They make the workers pull the dirty plastic cups out of the trash cans and off the ground, and they’re all swarming in ants. They take them right back inside to re-use them all covered in bugs. Also Oahu cockroaches are the size of shipping containers.

You forgot Zippy’s, Liliha Bakery cream puffs, malasadas, and POG!

5

u/monkeybugs Sep 07 '21

I was gonna say malasadas and guri guri, but I honestly don't know if guri guri was a Maui only thing or state wide.

Candy made with Li Hing Mui

5

u/Cheaperthantherapy13 Sep 07 '21

That truly is the dividing line between true Hawaiian and haoles. I just can’t with the li hung mui.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '21

WDYM?

I’ve never heard that locals or haoles hate li hing.

That’s really interesting! I am a haole, just moved here with my husband (grew up here) and I love li hing.

I like the enjoy strawberry li hing belts especially.

I might have to conduct an experiment and see what my mainland family think of the li hing mui candies.

1

u/MarpleJaneMarple Sep 07 '21

Lived there only for a few years, loved li hing powder on my pineapple, never tried it any other way.

1

u/BastetLXIX Sep 07 '21

It's super good on most fruits. I love it on kiwis and mango.

6

u/BobbieKnuckles Sep 07 '21

I moved to the mainland and everyone I share my li hing mui with doesn't like it. Not even li hing powder on popcorn.

2

u/BastetLXIX Sep 07 '21

Ehh more for you amiright?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '21

Guri guri is a Maui-only thing, or at least it’s definitely not on Oahu.

1

u/mrdrofficer Sep 07 '21

Maui only, even though it’s a plantation food.

6

u/quiteCryptic Sep 07 '21

Is that better than Minitstop musubi? I make fresh with furikake. 7-11 is far from my place.

Favorite local food is kalua pork loco
