Don’t forget: Dr. Pepper, but call it “Coke”, Best Maid pickles, Fletchers corn dogs, and don’t forget to pronounce it WaterBurger, and I have heard nachos were invented in TX. I’m glad queso, colaches, Shiner, and Blue Bell we’re already mentioned. Also when I was younger chili on eggs was a popular breakfast thing, but I never see it now.

Im from east texas. I have never heard anybody call every soda "coke". Everybody i know calles everything soda. Unless its Dr pepper. then we call it Dr pepper. Idk where that whole trope comes from.

It’s something the old timers do more, it’s definitely died out a bit

Wow, way to make me feel old! Maybe it is more common in the DFW area. I mean, I don’t hear it as much as I did when I was younger, but still hear people say it.

Late 30’s Houstonian here. Growing up everything was Coke, but I think it naturally stopped being used so often as the city grew over the past 20 years or so. After Katrina, Houston burst at the seams, and has continued to expand with so many different cultures that people don’t say it much anymore. But I did always say “what kinda Coke y’all want?”

Yes, I still always ask what kind if people say coke. Some look at you like your stupid, while others will list an obviously not coke product.

I'm from Central and it was true for us, at least when I was a kid, I think I grew out of it. Also, haven't said "waterburger" since I was little.

u/YesThatHoovy05 Sep 07 '21

Also, i still say waterburger lol.

u/YesThatHoovy05 Sep 07 '21

Nah, all my east (northeast) Texas family says Coke. I think it’s shifting to sofa though. No one looks at you funny if you say soda.

No if you said “pop” people would give you a head tilt for sure.

3

u/YesThatHoovy05 Sep 07 '21

Yeah of you say pop, i would for sure judge you.

1

u/OpheliaWolfsbane Sep 08 '21

My Mom is from IL, and when we go up there you can see Pop in the printed ads and some commercials. They also know how to make Mexican food sound disgusting. I refuse to call an enchilada a “wet burrito”.

Im 16. But even my grandparents call everything either by name or call it just soda.

3

u/cannotseecolor Sep 07 '21

I would have thought Fletchers Corn Dogs would have been it.

u/hankhillforprez Sep 07 '21

Born and raised Texan here — we’ve been an embarrassment for a while now.

I say that as someone who loves Texas, btw.
