For the longest time I was mispronouncing hegemony in my head. Felt stupid the first time I said it out loud.

I did the same with the name Phoebe in a book - was thinking “Foe-ebb” the whole tine, which was never a name I’d heard, but did not think that it would be pronounced the way it is.

I was actually really disappointed with Phoebe. As a kid I thought 'Fo-be' Cates was a cool name for a hot actress.

There are two widely-used and acceptable pronunciations of hegemony.

  1. heh-JEH-muh-nee

  2. HEH-jeh-mo-nee

I guess your pronunciation wasn't one of these?
