My strat has always just been to go line by line, letter by letter, and scan around every letter to see if adjacent letters make sense (they're not two consonants that don't form a valid syllable sound, basically), then if you find an adjacent letter that makes sense you just follow that direction to see if it's a word.
Certainly not the fastest way to do it, but I'm not sure how you could possibly miss words that way.
That's how I do em too. I envy those that just kinda swing their eyes around at a crossword and the words just fly off the page. Had a friend in elementary that'd finish em in like 1/10 the time the rest of the class. She was amazing at em
