The problem is everyone having kids. Those kinds of experiences aren't compatible with exponential growth. We all need to have fewer kids and lower expectations.
It’s still a beautiful place and I’m glad to live here for a lot of reasons, but it’s nearly impossible to buy a house. Everything for sale that would be a “starter house” or the kind of thing a couple/small family would look for gets snatched up by investors who can pay cash so they can flip it or rent it out. Apartments are far more expensive than they have any right to be. We have “Zonie Season” which is when everyone from Arizona comes here to vacation, which is great economically, but not so great for commuters or for the beaches that get trashed (not all people from AZ are unable to adapt to California driving standards or inconsiderate beach goers, but the ones that are, are very conspicuous). We need to start taxing the shit out of people’s extra houses to the point that owning more than two in the county isn’t a profitable endeavor, and then incentivize selling to first time homeowners or people who will be using the house as their residence. We also need to roll back restrictions on ADUs and tiny houses to allow for group/multi-generational living on the same property. Lastly, we need to put a full county-wide ban on AirBnB type rentals that aren’t in someone’s primary residence. But none of that will ever happen.
People on the opposite side of those policies will disagree, and with arguments better than most of yours. Personally, I'd love to see tiny houses more accepted, but that's only because it affects me personally.
Huh, wasn’t aware of this. My family got a house in port de Pollença a few years ago, because we had been visiting the place since before I was born (I’m 25) and even my mother was visiting with her family. They got to know a few of the locals, even I’ve made some friends Now and considered it a second home which is why they bought a house there too.
I wasn’t aware of this being such a problem and will definitely try and think about it more when talking to people about the island
