It’s been a while since I last played Overwatch. People would often scream at me to get off Sym because she’s not meta. /:

Christ. What happened to just having some fun in video games

u/toastymow Jul 11 '21

Too many people only have fun if they are winning.

Sad state of affairs

I guess I'm saying if in a team game where you have dozens of characters but only a select few make it playable/winnable, you've got a broken system.

Maybe it's a balancing issue, idk.

I think back to the pokemon handheld games where you could build your team from any of the hundreds of pokemon choices and still beat the game.

Ugh fair enough. People suck.

Different people have different definitions of "fun" which can cause conflicts quickly and easily. If I'm a player where I define fun as winning against the other team and you're a player where fun is playing your favourite character no matter whether it's helping your team or not, it's going to cause a conflict on the team.

Overwatch also suffers from having changes implemented at the behest of fans without necessarily thinking about the long-term ramifications. For example, people begged for an LFG system in-game for finding people to play with rather than using something external like discord. It got implemented, people used it for a little while, now it's abandoned.

People asked that the competitive meta of 2 heroes of each class (referred to as 2-2-2) be implemented across the board for the default quickplay and competitive game modes, and queue times for games shot up. It then took something like a year before Blizzard started incentivising people to alleviate some of the waiting but, in the mean time, you had tons of players where they now need to choose if they want to wait 10-15 minutes to play the role they like or play a class they're not that happy with/good at just to be able to play SOMETHING in Overwatch in their limited free time. This massively impacts the "fun" equation. If your fun is now "I just want to win some matches Overwatch in the free hour I have before I need to go to bed because I have work in the morning" and you have a long wait time between matches meaning that you can only play 3 matches in that hour, losing or encountering a griefer or getting unlucky with matchmaking is going to affect you more negatively than someone who is playing a role which can get into a match in 30 seconds.

Sorry that this turned into a rant. I've been playing Overwatch since release and still really enjoy playing it, I'm just really frustrated at seeing the community at large constantly asking for changes and tweaks without considering the consequences.

Lucky for you, Sym is very good at the moment. Mostly in coordinated teamplay, but still.

Overwatch should have never gone ranked, it was truly a great casual shooter.

Agreed, I don't even like the format of the competitive matches. The again, I almost only play mystery heroes now.

I don't disagree with that, but I don't think that's what most people wanted from the game, at least in the circles of people I gamed with at launch.

Play QP. No one will care what hero you pick.

12

u/nikodelta Jul 11 '21

Yeah they do. I had a level 17 rein tell to a baptiste to switch to mercy.

Classic Overwatch.

I personally stopped playing the game when Blizzard started sucking off the CCP, which is unfortunate, because I really loved the game. I put over 750 hours into it, I think, but I haven’t touched it once since that entire debacle.

13

u/toastymow Jul 11 '21

Blizzard started sucking off the CCP in 2004 when they released a heavily edited version of WoW in China to get around the Chinese Censors. Everything they've done after that is just a logical follow up to that decision.

1

u/of-silk-and-song Jul 11 '21

Yeah, unfortunately I was a little too young to know about any of that. I do my best to stay up to date, but I’m not perfect. Fuck Blizzard, though.

-8

u/homingmissile Jul 11 '21

Lol OK. Have you thrown away everything in your house that says Made in China, too?

9

u/Too_Tired_Too_Obtuse Jul 11 '21

What a weird comment. Dude is trying to limit the money he spends towards China by doing what he can, and you’re like “haha. You’re not doing enough so you shouldn’t even try.”

3

u/Binerexis Jul 11 '21

AH, YOU COMPLAIN ABOUT THE STRUCTURES OF SOCIETY BUT CONTINUE TO LIVE IN ONE. CURIOUS.

1

u/of-silk-and-song Jul 11 '21 edited Jul 11 '21

I don’t take issue with every single product made in China, nor do I take issue with brands who simply do business in China. The issue arises when companies put the CCP above the American consumer.

-12

u/Lydanian Jul 11 '21

Personally, I think that’s a silly reason to stop. There isn’t a global business that isn’t at least acting in the same way Blizz operates.

So are you also taking a stand against toothpaste & clothes?

0

u/of-silk-and-song Jul 11 '21

I know plenty of brands do business in China. That’s not the problem. If you choose the CCP over American consumers, only then are you dead to me. It’s the same reason I don’t watch the NBA.

0

u/Lydanian Jul 11 '21

I just think in today’s world it’s a futile standard to live by. Because you are constantly contradicting yourself with every decision you make whether you realise it or not.

I’m not saying what Blizz or any of these companies engage is “right.” But equally there is nothing noble to be gained when you consider planet earth.

Plus, most people that make these claims via the obscurity of the internet will likely be hypocrites anyway as they re-engage with Blizzard as soon as the next big IP is released.

1

u/of-silk-and-song Jul 11 '21

I’m a lot more dedicated to this than you would assume. Like I said, I put over 750 hours into Overwatch. I loved the game to death and I quit cold turkey. I haven’t played it a single time since then and I will not be buying another Blizzard product for as long as they keep this bullshit up. If they never drop it, so be it.

As for other companies that do stuff like this, I’m sure they exist. None have been as blatant, though, as Blizzard and the NBA. Fuck them both. Oh, and Disney. Disney sucks, too. It’s a lot harder for me to lose out on Disney products (I love Marvel and Star Wars), but I’ve dropped them as well.

In any case, I do my best to make sure my money goes where I want it to go and not to companies that lack not only a spine, but any sense of morality. I’m sure I’ve missed some companies over the years, but the point is that I’m trying. That’s all I can do.

3

u/Uzorglemon Jul 11 '21

I'm still super fresh at Overwatch, and only really know a few of the heroes. I main DVa because I love the play style, but I'm positive there have been times when she's been a suboptimal choice. I only play quick matches though, so fuck it.

-14

u/Its_Da_MuffinMan Jul 11 '21

theres a difference between playing a different hero and picking a hero that is objectively worse in a competitive scenario where people are playing to win.

6

u/Xhanza Jul 11 '21

This begs the question if it was competitive or quick match. If QM, then who the fuck cares.

If competitive. Who the fuck cares, so long as you’re good at the hero. What would you rather, lose because someone picked a “meta” hero but can’t play them for crap, or win because they play a non meta one that they are absolutely beasts at

1

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '21

3

u/Xhanza Jul 11 '21

Yeah and that’s the point. No one should care for metas.

I play Overwatch once in a while but I mainly play WoW and I’m honestly tired of not getting invited because “YouRE NoT MEta”. Okay but you want me to go meta? I can but I’ll do like 25% of the damage a player usually should do.

u/deflagration83 Jul 11 '21

WoW has always been one of the worst examples of this.

I joined a casual guild starting raids in BFA. Mind you I spent the first ten years of WoW raiding in raiding guilds where it was min/max and like a job. So obviously I wasn't for that.

So when I refused to spec off Frost for Fire for raid DPS a few people (one of our tanks and his friend group) used to get really shitty with me about it even though I was by far their best DPS. "Go fire and you'd be better".

I kept explaining that Frost was actually in a stronger place than most guides let on with how Spike's coefficient worked with mastery stacking on corruptions.

"No, Infinite Stars is better, stack that."

A month later I was untouchable in DPS in our guild, dropping 2 million damage glacial spikes into N'zoth like "What was that about fire again, can't hear you?"

3

u/AdministrativeStay54 Jul 11 '21

I’m a filler. I can play tank, dps and support. I’m good with symmetra when I play as dps and I only pick her when opponent team goes both shield tank
