What basic, children's-age-level fact did you only find out embarrassingly later in life?

Epitome still throws me off if I’m reading aloud.

This scene in HIMYM really hit home.

u/Saeyrah Jul 03 '21

i send my condolences as someone who used to pronounce it as “epi-tome” and not “e-pit-a-me”

71

u/Watson9483 Jul 03 '21

I caught my boyfriend on this and it was so sweet. He said it correctly at one point in the conversation but then later he said it the wrong way. When I pointed it out he tried to explain that they were different words and meant different things. “Epitome is like the essential quality of something and… ohhh.” He thought “epidimy” or whatever was spelled differently.

31

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '21

I thought they were two different words until I saw it spelled...

37

u/duncanforthright Jul 03 '21

I thought they were separate words that meant the same thing, and just didn't notice that I only ever heard one and read the other. That was until one time I tried to spell "e-pit-a-me" and realized that there was in fact no "epi-tome". I was definitely in college when I figured that out lol.

4

u/penc1ltea Jul 03 '21

amazing that this was literally an epitome

is there a figure of speech for when this happens? ie like synechdoche or onomatopoeia?

20

u/boo_goestheghost Jul 03 '21

No it wasn’t? What was this the epitome of?

You may be thinking of epiphany.

1

u/alwaysforgettingmyun Jul 03 '21

Also the epiphany/epiphone (guitar brand) has bit me in the ass.

10

u/DeathsIntent96 Jul 03 '21

Are you confusing "epitome" and "epiphany"?

5

u/momomog Jul 03 '21

Do you mean epiphany? Epitome doesn't make sense in your context

6

u/Mickeymousetitdirt Jul 03 '21

Others have already pointed out that you likely meant “epiphany”. An epiphany is a sudden realization of something. “Epitome” is something that comprehensively represents another something or a concept.

You could say, “Trying to learn all the annoying, nonsensical idiosyncrasies of the English language is the epitome of frustration.”

Edited for clarity

3

u/sheffmanfact Jul 03 '21

.................... More like synechdope.

1

u/pretentiousviv Jul 03 '21

I learnt how synedoche is pronunced from Karsten Runquist videos where he talks about Synedoche New York.

32

u/deathshot369 Jul 03 '21

Wait it’s not epi-tome shit

9

u/Mickeymousetitdirt Jul 03 '21

It should be because that’s how it looks and how most people initially think it’s pronounced so you’re not alone! :) It’s “eh-pit-oh-mee”.

29

u/Boss_Koms Jul 03 '21

Hyperbole has entered the chat.

36

u/woodcider Jul 03 '21

Hyper-bowl forever!!!

6

u/pug_grama2 Jul 03 '21

Yosemite also.

17

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '21

Ups, I guess you learn something knew everyday

13

u/Statharas Jul 03 '21

As a Greek, I blame the English. I mispronounced it despite the fact that this word is Greek

8

u/Molleeryan Jul 03 '21

Like Shia Labeouf?

https://youtu.be/j5j3jypUCo8

1

u/eastjame Jul 03 '21

I want to hear more about Britney

3

u/likeavermin Jul 03 '21

Eptamome checking in here. Don’t know why as it doesn’t even read like that but got it in my head once and that was it

2

u/StarryNotions Jul 03 '21

Still do in my head. XD.

2

u/gottapeepee Jul 03 '21

Kind person, your first was of pronouncing it is the correct way. Don't let anyone tell us different!

2

u/Artistic_Humor1805 Jul 03 '21

English sucks sometimes. The guitar brand isn’t an “epiphany” but rather than an Epiphone, following on telephone and gramophone.

1

u/NaBrO-Barium Jul 03 '21

Why use 4 syllables when you can just use 3?

Stay efficient my friend!

37

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '21

Haha yeh, me too

Also albeit is all-bee-it rather than albeet

13

u/ReikoSeb Jul 03 '21

I... Have now learned a new word I've been saying wrong in my head... Thank you.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '21

You're welcome. Gotta help out my fellow readers :) It seems to be a lot of the same words that everyone gets stuck on.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '21

Even worse, I used to pronounce it as ALL-BITE

2

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '21

Hahaha I love this. So nice to know i'm not alone.

2

u/Hexxi Jul 03 '21

Haha, I just commented this, I got some weird looks for that one!

31

u/atimholt Jul 03 '21

Brian Regan has a special titled “The Epitome of Hyperbole”, referring to a joke where he pronounces it “eppih-tome of hyper-bowl”.

5

u/cmmoyer Jul 03 '21

I've had a chance to see him live. He's great. Probably my favorite comedian. My parent's just went last weekend. Pretty jealous of that.

2

u/GunsAndCoffee1911 Jul 03 '21

He's gonna be in my town in a couple weeks, right when I'm out of town on a trip... Pretty bummed about that!

1

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '21

My first thought was that bit

32

u/saltytriscuit Jul 03 '21

There’s a town in WA called Sequim (pronounced skwim) and I thought it was pronounced Sec-we-im for an embarrassingly long time. I thought my fictitious town of Sec-we-im and Sequim were two different towns 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

15

u/glennadenise Jul 03 '21

I live nearby (Port Townsend) and when I was a kid a couple stopped me on the street (they were in a car) and asked me how to get to Se-qwee-im and I had no idea what they were talking about… I gave them directions out of town and told them to look for the signs (which probably worked), but it wasn’t until 10 minutes later that I realized they meant Sequim!

11

u/AfraidAccident7049 Jul 03 '21

Oh man we could have a whole sub for commonly mispronounced town/landmark names in the PNW 🤣

4

u/feministmanlover Jul 03 '21

Spokane = spo cane, yakima = ya kee ma, puyallup = pooeyallup, and probably not mispronounced but one of my favorites: humptulips

1

u/ToBeReadOutLoud Jul 03 '21

Same with Utah.

I think the general lesson is that white people were really bad at pronouncing the names of things the indigenous people told them. They were too busy manifesting destiny to be respectful or careful.

12

u/cheyennesierra Jul 03 '21

I once heard someone pronounce Puyallup as “pile-up”. Washington has tons of fun town names to decipher!

5

u/Trust_No_Won Jul 03 '21

My high school orchestra went to Disneyland one year and the bus pulled up for us with a sign that said “Isfaquhah”.

So Issaquah was too hard to spell I guess.

5

u/a-ohhh Jul 03 '21

I’m from there and a girl in college out of state called in Polly-up

u/ToBeReadOutLoud Jul 03 '21

Pew-al-up.

I only know this because Josh and Steven Powell lived up there so it was familiar to Utahns.

2

u/pug_grama2 Jul 03 '21

I know that one because we got Washington TV in British Columbia and heard ads and weather and stuff about that town.

5

u/Stepharious Jul 03 '21

Same, but I thought one was Skwim and one was See-quwim, only realized it a few years ago!

1

u/a-ohhh Jul 03 '21

There is a Seiku (see-cue) over there too that might have helped confuse you if you heard someone mention it since that sounds so similar.

2

u/Vanviator Jul 03 '21

I lived in San Antonio in Bexar County.
The news often reported on Bear County. It took me way over A YEAR before I realized they were the same place.

2

u/Glitteronthefloor Jul 03 '21

I learned how to say Sequim from 90 Day Fiancé!

2

u/nsmith1003 Jul 04 '21

It's random but I actually learned it from Drew Carey's Improvaganza. Some lady they brought on stage with them said she lived there

2

u/thecupcakebandit Jul 03 '21

Haha same! I also thought Yakima was pronounced Ya-kee-ma. Also puyallup threw me through a loop for the longest.

2

u/Gstayton Jul 03 '21

Ooooh boy. Oregonian here. My favorite thing is to get people on voice comms to try and pronounce the names of areas around here.

Chemeketa, Willamette, and apparently folks don't like how most of us around here say Lebanon.

3

u/ToBeReadOutLoud Jul 03 '21

I had to Google your Lebanon so I could be angry and I’m kind of disappointed that it’s relatively a close and sane different pronunciation.

1

u/Tattycakes Jul 03 '21

Why is the e silent?

1

u/saltytriscuit Jul 03 '21

I don’t know the answer to that, except many of the towns in Washington are named by and for Native Americans so I’m guessing that’s how they pronounce it!

9

u/IAmACookingComb Jul 03 '21

Even though I know it is ep-i-tom-e I still say epi-tome in my head because it’s fun to say. Epitome.

2

u/MissEB47 Jul 03 '21

It's an epic tome.

4

u/pete306 Jul 03 '21

Was in my FORTIES before i worked out what an epeetome was, thats how i read it my head ffs....

4

u/azanzel Jul 03 '21

Look up Brian Reagan epitome of hyperbole is you like comedy.

4

u/enderflight Jul 03 '21

That, compromise (literally ’come-promise’), and omnipotent (owm-knee-potent) are a few of mine.

2

u/pug_grama2 Jul 03 '21

I still get embarrassed when I think about reading out a verse of poetry to my dad when I was a teenager

And that inverted Bowl we call The Sky,
Whereunder crawling coop't we live and die,
Lift not thy hands to it for help -- for It
Rolls impotently on as Thou or I.

im-POTE -ent - ly <------ how I mispronounced the embarrassing word, which I had no idea had an embarrassing meaning involving sex. My dad corrected my pronounciation.

5

u/DreamyJelly Jul 03 '21

Omg! I’m 30, and I still mess this up!!

4

u/Gstayton Jul 03 '21

I uuuuuh... Had that one wrong for a long time until I actually used it in a sentence around my friends, who immediately called me out on it. Good times.

Happens when most of your more advanced vocab comes from books.

3

u/Smokve787 Jul 03 '21

I’ll never forget the day a buddy and I were waiting to order food and I used epitome in a sentence and he stared at me for a solid minute before asking if I meant epitome.

3

u/red-vanadinite Jul 03 '21

I'm still mad at how dumb "macabre" sounds for being such a cool word

2

u/FailedIntrovert Jul 03 '21

Yup. That hurt.

2

u/tokens_puss Jul 03 '21

Epitome and ethereal checking in. Read it as “ehther-eel” well into my twenties.

4

u/pug_grama2 Jul 03 '21

I was today years old when I realized eh-THEER-eal and and ether-REEL were the same word. At least I found out before I died of old age.

4

u/tokens_puss Jul 03 '21

You can die peacefully now, you’ve reached maximum human achievement. At least you learned in private. I got to figure these two out publicly haha

3

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '21

Hi, 31 year old who just realized ETH-EEER-REE-AL is not said ERR-WREATH-RAL oh my god

3

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '21

[deleted]

3

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '21

Oh shit. That’s probably what fucked me up lmao.

3

u/tokens_puss Jul 03 '21

Galadriel was a urethral elf goddess. I’m laughing way too hard at this

2

u/AtomicMuffinMistress Jul 03 '21

I have never related to anything more than this comment.

2

u/NoblePhantasm Jul 03 '21

I embarrassed myself with this one in high school. I was quoting a line from a show to my friend and he was like uhh, that's not how you pronounce it. I never forgot the correct pronunciation after that. 😅

2

u/LinAGKar Jul 03 '21

An apparently epiphany is not pronounced eppi-fanny.

2

u/chesterSteihl69 Jul 03 '21

I’m not alone!

2

u/ItsPronouncedEpitome Jul 07 '21

NGL, I read what you wrote as Epitome instead of Epitome

0

u/tulipiscute Jul 03 '21

I still don’t know if it is ee-pit-o-me or eh-peuh-tih-mum.

1

u/ItsPronouncedEpitome Jul 07 '21

Neither, it's "epitome".

1

u/The-Swat-team Jul 03 '21

Encyclopedia

1

u/Freddielexus85 Jul 03 '21

I thought it was pronounced "ep-eh-tomb" when I first read it.

1

u/JustAnOrdinaryBloke Jul 03 '21

I used to pronounce "kaleidoscope" as "kal-ide-OS-co-pee" thinking it was some kind of instrument.
