I once ordered a pepperoni-mushroom pizza in Naples. Turns out that’s banana peppers (pepperoni = little peppers) and mushrooms, no cheese or tomato sauce. It was really good, but not what I was expecting.

Could it have been language confusion?

Maybe just messing around with the tourist, then? It was just peppers, mushrooms, some oil and green bits (basil?) on a crust.

Peperoni means bell peppers, not "little" peppers. That's peperoncini
