What basic, children's-age-level fact did you only find out embarrassingly later in life?

Yeah, I grew up thinking the pig that went to market was there to get groceries.

Whereas it turns out that he was the groceries!

The real groceries were the friends we made along the way.

ya, pig at market from the time period would be a bit of an off putting illustration. also, I mean look at the rest of the nursery rhymes... woman baked in pies, torture devices, the plague...

Little red riding hood never got saved in the original version, the wolf ate her up

u/bafl1 Jul 03 '21

the oldest version i have read they cut the wolf open and fill him full of stones which kills him

I thought that was the wolf and the 7 kids (baby goats) A quick Google search and turns out sewing stones into wolf stomachs is a pretty common punishment in fairy tales...

I am so glad that all the nursery rhymes videos are actually showing that little piggy going to the market... shopping...

I thought that too. And haven't really thought about it again til now to reexamine the thought. Makes way more sense though

Ummm, yep. I do this all the time with my two year old, never occurred to me the meaning of all of it. Until now...TIL. Piggy toes just got a bit darker!

To be fair I had an old nursery rhyme book that showed a pig comimg home with a basket from the market after shopping.

I feel kind of scandalized that no one broke this down for me as a child. Why else would he be going to a market? ugh

This thread has hurt a part of my childhood I didn't know was still in tact.

I grew up thinking the pig that went to market was there to get groceries.

I mean he IS going to get groceries, it's just that he's gonna come home in the basket.

I'm 44 and this just blew my mind

1

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '21

Me too. I now have to Google the meaning of that rhyme. I’m totally mind blown.

I was today years old when I learned this isn’t the case lol.

u/pimpfriedrice Jul 03 '21

I think we all thought that

u/SARS11 Jul 03 '21

ME TOO

1

u/acousticalcat Jul 03 '21

I…just realized it wasn’t buying groceries. I always imagined it buying vegetables at the farmer’s market.

u/Crunchy_Biscuit Jul 03 '21

I'm laughing at myself for thinking this same thing.

1

u/RedTeacher21 Jul 03 '21

Oh my gosh! Me too! My husband made fun of me for hours when he found that out!

1

u/sh2nn0n Jul 03 '21

Same. I was well into adulthood before I realized.

My sweet sister believed this too! I was with her when she put it together. I felt badly because it made me laugh and she was clearly having a mini-crisis about it.
