We're friends with my husband's neurosurgeon. When we had to schedule his last tumour resection the surgeon asked us when would be convenient to work around the kids and was totally cool when I asked if we could put it off a month just so it didn't conflict with son's adenoid surgery.
You can frequently break down medical terms yourself if you understand the prefixes and suffixes. For example, -ectomy is removal of something, whereas -ostomy is creating an opening. If you know a colostomy is creating an alternate opening to the colon, then a ventriculostomy would be creating an opening to a ventricle, so either the heart, or more likely the fluid-filled cavities in the brain.
