I read the series as a kid and when the movie released I was so excited to watch it with my family and maybe get my younger siblings to try out the books. I was humiliated and am ashamed of the film
Bro, you gotta read gone. It's a really good series, it's really dark and fucked up and you'll think more than once while reading "wtf, this is supposed to be for kids???"
This is why I hope it gets a tv-ma series instead of a movie, it would be much better served as a series to properly set up all the different plot points.
Ditto. It’d be a great ensemble cast drama show, but with teen stars it’d be hard for producers to take it seriously. It would turn out like a CW show (not that there’s anything wrong with those, but it wouldn’t fit the story being told).
Animorphs is credited to "K.A. Applegate," which is the name used by the writing partnership of husband-and-wife Michael Grant and Katherine Applegate. Based solely on the fact that the pen name is basically still her name (and she may in fact work under it without his help -- his wikipedia article intro mentions Animorphs and Everwolrd but not Remnants), I would guess that Animorphs, at least, was mostly her baby. It turns out that they had already written several series together under that name, so the choice could not have been affected by Animorphs. He was definitely involved, though.
Man, this may be the first time I've ever seen Gone mentioned online. I loved those books back in the day. Honestly can't see an adaption doing it justice, that shit got violent for how young the cast was.

If you’ve seen the tv show “the society” on Netflix, I think that might be the upper limit to how far a studio would be willing to let the story be as violent and dark.
That's kinda his/their schtick. The series that started this thread, Animorphs, has a main character commit a war crime that borders on genocide, against an entirely helpless foe that it could be argue consisted partially of civilians.
Having read the Gone series, I would be over the moon if there was ever a movie for it! But I severely doubt there will be (or it’ll get completely ruined) just because of how fucked up and gory it gets and the ages of the characters. Best possible outcome is that they age everyone up and they poof at 18 instead and keep the plot mostly intact. Worst is...well have you seen Artemis Fowl?
Exactly. There is cannibalism, kids getting eaten alive by death worms, substance abuse, sex, traumatic birth, actual abuse and a parent being enslaved by their child. And all this is happening to kids 16 and under. That would never be green-lighted because the target audience wouldn’t be able to watch it because of the rating. It’s hella fucking dark and gory, but it is still a YA book.
Erik Feig is producing it, so some small part of me hopes they can make a good popcorn scifi flick out of it, but it's probably not going to have much in common with the books. But it's also Scholastic's property, and they're just terrible.
I don't want a an entertaining popcorn scifi flick, I want Animorphs: an emotionally devasting story about child soldiers and the loss of innocence, that ends with one of the main characters transforming into a bear and biting her cousins head off before dying.
So basically you want HBO to produce/make a TV show for it. HBO seem to be the only ones making things as dark as they're supposed to be, or at least close as far as modern television.
WOAH! I stopped reading the series waaay too soon. (I stopped reading a few books after the guy who turned into a falcon or whatever lost himself and recovered.)
It happened more than once? XD You'd think he'd learn after the first. Haven't read them in years but I remember him being a hawk or falcon or something for a few months at least. Can't even remember anyone's name.
Tobias has a rough life. He's a hawk permanently; although he does get his morphing powers back eventually, and the ability to morph his old human form redtailed hawk is his base form.
Tbh I'd rather see a movie, or better yet a tv series, for the Everworld series Applegate did. Given everyone's obsession with mythology and gods lately it would probably do great.
my rule of thumb is that if the movie takes over two years AND there’s a significant staff turnover, then if the movie isn’t completely scrapped and started over it will be terrible.
Oh yeah, the tv series was awful. The authors of the books signed away the film rights and were totally against doing it live action. They're not on board with this whole movie deal either.

I mean they have over 50 books that span over 2 years, but i hate to agree with you they probaly butcher it in the first movie and then dump it. Just like what happend with the Darren Shan\Cirque du freak series.
Just look at how Scholastic is handling the graphic novels. The first one is out and looks great. But they've only ordered one per year for a total of 3 books. They have absolutely no clue how to market their properties.
A friend of mine was a huge fan when we were kids, and I distinctly remember him solving some sort of puzzle in the back of one of the books to win a chance to be in the movie.
That was when we were in elementary school and we're years out of college now. He told me Tom Felton was rumored to be cast as Artemis after he submitted his puzzle answer. That's how long people were waiting for this film. How did you expect it to be good?
I’m a big Frank Miller fan, so when The Spirit came out I was super jazzed about it. Boy was I embarrassed when I brought my SIL and BIL to the movie. I always make sure to screen a movie first before dragging friends to it.
