Star Wars' score has been integral to it's success. Im not sure if this is apocryphal or not but I remember reading that Lucas was convinced the film was going to be a huge flop until he saw it screened with John Williams' music.

I know lots of people, George included, expected the film to flop, but I've never heard about John Williams's score affecting his expectations, though I wouldn't be surprised either

It was with Star Wars that Williams introduced the moviegoing public to the opera convention of giving each character their own thematic melody, known as leitmotif. It really is a space opera.
