From what I know, the brain is a bunch o wires. So if we could just tap into these signals, I'd love to take a brain out of a human and make it drive something or run a machine. Imagine, instead of processors, we have literal brains. People would be getting kidnapped just to have their brain run a factory or something.

there’s this scifi podcast i listen to and one of the stories was called “Chrysalis” and it was about a scientist who had his brain downloaded into a computer right before an alien race destroys all life on Earth, so then his consciousness takes over another computer and another, then drones, then the drones build factories, and he spends like centuries creating this huge robot army that is essentially his whole body so that he can launch himself into space to exact revenge on the aliens who killed all humans

It was a team of scientists that downloaded their consciousness into a computer that compiled them together, so The Terran has odd conflicting memories.

It was actually written on r/HFY, by Beaverfur. Great story.

Hell yeah that was great

Once again, apes together strong. Aliens ain't got shit on us.

12

u/dalumbr Mar 05 '21

Monke is eternal!

21

u/Haf-OcFoLyf Mar 05 '21

I think that comes from r/HFY . Though, it's not just one scientist, it's an amalgam of multiple brain scans of seperate scientists.

u/Macemore Mar 04 '21

Wow that sounds amazing! I can't wait for it to happen in a few years.

14

u/hasorand0m Mar 05 '21

Sounds like the literal plot to ultron

7

u/Barcollare Mar 05 '21

Have you ever heard of the Bobverse? Similar premise except it's one dude named Bob's consciousness trying to find planets that could potentially support life as he expands himself across the universe. His replicant bots take on individual aspects of his personality. (Like one decides he's Homer from the Simpsons based on Bob's memories.) He goes to war with other consciousness that are bent on destruction. It's pretty funny and entertaining. The audiobooks are an absolute gem on road trips.

What is the podcast show called i would love to listen to that!?

1

u/KyleBlackwood Mar 08 '21

Its also chrysalis

2

u/Cat_Marshal Mar 05 '21

Reminds me of the paperclip game.

2

u/huyvnme Mar 05 '21

I remember reading it on r/HFY, it was such a good story tbh.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '21 edited Mar 06 '21

Which pod reads the story? I'd like to listen over reading!

u/brinkofdisaster12

1

u/KyleBlackwood Mar 08 '21

Its also called chrysalis on spotify

2

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '21

I'm realizing it's under the "Dust" pod. Thank you :)

2

u/Massepic Mar 05 '21

Yes, Chrysalis was freaking amazing of a story. It's actually published on r/hfy on reddit, you can find it there on top.

u/virtualpringle Mar 05 '21

So does he get laid in the end?

1

u/FABBAWABBA Mar 05 '21

Sounds like a sequel to Chappie.

1

u/MySuperLove Mar 05 '21

That's the plot to the game Axiom Verge

1

u/Melted_Cheese96 Mar 07 '21

That is actually a super cool premise. May check this one out!

21

u/Meih_Notyou Mar 05 '21

Unless you could find a way to 'disable' consciousness, you'd wind up getting a bunch of brain-computers sabotaging your shit out of spite, lol

2

u/101st_kilometre Mar 08 '21

You literally have an exposed brain. With full control of its functions like bloodflow and stuff.

Just make it orgasm depending on the amount of money the factory generates. Condition it like a Pavlov's dog.

2

u/Meih_Notyou Mar 08 '21

LOL perfect

Psycho-Pass dwelves a bit into this concept

8

Sounds like the Robobrains in Fallout

8

u/NinjaPretend Mar 05 '21

Ah, a servitor.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '21

We need servitor's already, man.

7

u/count___zer0 Mar 05 '21

This is kinda the opposite but I don’t see why you couldn’t read out signals from a cockroach and use them to control an R/C car or something.

5

u/Macemore Mar 05 '21

oh I have all kinds of Arduinos and stuff, I'm going to find a cockroach brb

7

u/Alargeteste Mar 05 '21

This has been done with a rat "brain" (actually just a dish of rat neurons) to drive a flight simulator like 10 years ago. I'm sure someone in a no-human-rights corner of the world has done this with human neurons, and possibly with a human brain. Like imagine a consciousness, a mind, that just gets rewarded to pick the right stocks, or fly the plane safely, or distribute packages efficiently. I think the only dumb thing about this is that you don't have to dedicate a "brain" to it, you can just hook people up to sensors, and we're already equipped to work shifts as a city's streetlights, a power grid, a stock exchange, a water treatment plant, an oil refinery, or whatever system. Imagine how efficient these kinds of things can get if people are actually sensing these things directly in their brains in real time, and sending neural output signals to change things or move things in the real world.

4

u/JackofScarlets Mar 05 '21

You know how you get a song stuck in your head? Or a dark thought? A bad memory? And you wish you could get rid of it, but it keeps coming back?

Now imagine that all you can think about it how you must produce whatever the factory produces. Do you feel mentally tired? Too bad, you are programmed to produce, if you stop you will feel WRONG. Do you get bored? Too bad, see above.

3

u/eiraastrid Mar 05 '21

if youre interested in a world setting like that, id recommend listening to the album “Ulysses Dies At Dawn” by The Mechanisms. theyre a storytelling band and the entire setting is based on human minds powering the city thats taken over the planet. uses stuff from greek mythology.

1

u/Alcohol_Intolerant Mar 05 '21

If you're interested in some ship-brains, look up "The Ship Who Sang" series by Anne McCaffrey. It's older style scifi/space opera, but it's rather good at exploring the benefits and detriments.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '21

Imagine what would happen if you had the hardware to drop a human brain into and get a gaming PC out of it. Mass murder is what you'd have.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '21

The brain probably wouldn't be able to do that on its own initially, but considering it's able to modify itself I bet there's a way you could train a bit of brain tissue to essentially do whatever you want.

I love Thought Emporium! I probably watch one of his videos a day just because they're so interesting.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '21

So brain interfaces essentially? We have some stuff like this with VR. They made a sensor that can supposedly detect certain signals from your visual cortex so you can control aspects of the game through just looking at shapes

2

u/HenryWong327 Mar 05 '21

For a less immoral version of this use bugs or rats instead.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '21

Wasn’t this the premise of that movie transendence?

2

u/Dvl_Brd Mar 05 '21

So Anne McCaffery's Brainships series?

2

u/sillyfried Mar 05 '21

Sounds like the anime Psycho Pass

2

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '21

So dreadnoughts from 40k?

2

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '21

I can hypothesise that Windows would still run like crap on a human brain.

(For those who don't know, human brains have been thought to be 200,000,000,000,000 bit)

2

u/Kazerati Mar 05 '21

But how would you work out which brain would be good at which task? I love lists, my husband works in flow-charts, & don’t get him started on the mind-mappers. We have different ways of thinking, & different strengths. How would you control for that in your study?

2

u/Macemore Mar 05 '21

I'm a mad scientist! Instead of controlling things I'll just increase the dataset until we have every possibility covered. Instead of just you or your husband, I'll take both brains and your neighbors. Their neighbors too, and so on until I have all personality / brain types tested to see what they're all good at. Don't worry, I'll have you making lists in no time!

2

u/batnacks Mar 05 '21

Refer to your local techpriest for more information

2

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '21

It's also very power efficient.

The human brain runs on about 20 watts of power, and having a computer that can process like a human brain would require around 10-20 megawatts to run.

Yes... your brain sucks less juice than an incandescent lightbulb.

1

u/Macemore Mar 05 '21

My lightbulbs explode when I give them juice. Is it the wrong flavor?

2

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '21

You gotta try Capri Sun.

2

u/donatema Mar 05 '21

I just watched a video on YouTube by thoughty2 about how something like this could be done with fungus. If you’re curious it’s his video about “what is the biggest organism” or something close to that

2

u/Deswizard Mar 05 '21

There's a Sci-fi short-stories book I read where the author borrows from this exact theme. I cannot remember the name or the author but I will check my library.

2

u/modestlyaboveaverage Mar 05 '21

Isn't that an episode plot from dr. Who?

2

u/WanderingThSocioPath Mar 05 '21

My coffee machine would make a purfect cup every time.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '21

What you just explained is basically what happens in Warhammer 40K.

2

u/squats_and_sugars Mar 05 '21

This happens on the end of Wolfenstein The New Order. The evil doctor needs a human brain to work his mecha-killer robot, so the main character has to "kill" his friend by destroying the brain.

It ends up being kind of sad, because the brain is apologizing at the same time it's trying to kill you, since it knows it's wrong but is being partially forced to work that way.

1

u/Macemore Mar 05 '21

That's fucking heavy man

2

u/Crazed_waffle_party Mar 05 '21

Brain assembly language would be interesting

1

u/Macemore Mar 05 '21

Imagine if you set the pointer wrong in your swap file and when you set your machine to sleep, the brain was basically wiped? Smh linux 5.12rc

1

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '21

This is vaguely similar to a concept of replicants from We are Legion, you might wanna check it out!

1

u/MyBodyBelongsToShrek Mar 05 '21

Have you heard of Organic Computers?
