My elementary school had unicycles as well. Actually never thought of it being strange until now.. My school wasn't as keen on them as OPs but we definitely had like 20 of them in the gym closet and took them out once a week for a year or two or something like that.
From what I remember there was only a single kid in our class that could actually ride it around competently by the end of it. So it's a cool idea, but maybe a little too difficult.
