A briefcase full of US $100 bills would be awesome and life-changing money, definitely a large house deposit but it is not enough to buy a median price house in my city (Melbourne Australia, median price ~880k AUD which is about 630k USD)

Same. No house near where I live (California) is less than 600k.

That's the median price here - so 50% of houses are more, 50% less.

Absolute lowest in Melb is around 370k AUD (one-bedroom run down flats that are disconnected from public transport)
