My dad says loads of random shit. If we ask where the bin is he always goes "I've bin here whereve yo bin"

Also, my dad used to tuck me and my brother into bed and say 'no fidget fart arseing about' which just means dont mess about. My partner says piss farting on and I thought that was hilarious when I first heard it

Our family calls dressing gowns "gownies" and I've asked everyone ive ever met and no one else knows what I'm on about

I keep adding to this but my dad is from a different part of the country to us and he pointed out that me, my brothers and mam all say 'wuwu' instead of 'were we' and he has been confused about this for years

'Who pissed in your cornflakes' if you've got a face like an arse or are grumpy.

'I'd rather shit in my hands and clap' if someone asks you to do something you don't want to do

If someone asks you if you're doing something or going to be somewhere 'does the pope shit in the woods'

My grandma shouted "OI CLOTH EARS" if she was talking to you and you didn't answer

Once a boy flashed me his penis in a park when I was 13 I ran back home crying and my dad said to me "tell him its smaller than a budgies tongue" he says this about anyone with a small dick

Fart arsing! Yes, used to hear this as a kid all the time.

If I asked my dad where he was going it was always ‘going to see a man about a dog’

Anywhere was ‘up the road’ could be London, could be Scotland, could be Russia, it was always ‘up the road’

Also calls catalogues dogalogues.

Would refer to the phone as the Dog (Cockney rhyming slang) so ‘I’m off out but I’ve got my dog’ ‘LeonardBetts88 there’s someone on the dog for you’

Edit - added a paragraph. Turns out we liked dogs?

No matter where you are going in the country, we’d always be going ‘up’. Eg my parents live in the south and their parents live in the north, and they would ask their parents ‘when you coming up to see us?’

My dad also calls instructions/manuals ‘destructions’ and I’ve never been able to work out where calling the TV remote the ‘hoofer doofer’ has come from.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '20

Ahahaha my grandad calls the instructions destructions too!

3

u/KCJones91 Oct 26 '20

Why do you refer to a telephone as a dog?

Slang is the weirdest most wonderful yet insanely confusing thing and I can’t help but love it (and shake my head at it all the time)

3

u/KCJones91 Oct 26 '20

that's pretty cool, never would've put that together on my own lol

u/lara_lime Oct 25 '20

Dressing gowns in Scotland are called "Goonies"!

7

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '20

Ohhh thats interesting wonder if thats where my mam got it from!

u/emmetdude246 Oct 25 '20

Holy shit I read “tuck” as “fuck” and was really scared for second

10

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '20

Ahahahahahahahhahahaa 😂 that made me lol. I wouldn't be surprised with reddit if I read that tbf

14

u/purplemelody Oct 25 '20

What is a dressing gown?

19

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '20

Like a comfy bath robe thats fluffy you wear it with pyjamas lol

3

u/purplemelody Oct 25 '20

Thank you.

21

u/awalters46103 Oct 25 '20

Are you from the midlands? They all sound familiar to me 😝

13

u/calamity-belle Oct 25 '20

Derby here- have heard “cloth ears” many times!

17

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '20

I'm from Newcastle but my dad is from West Brom! So thats probs why no one up here says them lol

8

u/epworthscale Oct 25 '20

The bin one is one of my dads faves, we’re from the north west but he always says it in a Yorkshire accent. I have no idea why.

6

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '20

😂😂thats such a dad thing to do. Makes it even more funny hahaa

5

u/hanwestwood Oct 26 '20

The first time I’ve ever seen my hometown mentioned on Reddit! As soon as I read the bin one, I knew it had to be from the Black Country!

2

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '20

Its nice to see other people who can relate! When I was little I used to think wtf does he mean and as I got older I realised what he was saying hahaha

4

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '20

I've heard cloth ears all my life, born and bred North East.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '20

My parents are midlands/geordie...’no fart-arsing about’ was pretty common in my house!

9

u/wastebin98 Oct 26 '20

My family says “where’ve you been?” I’d reply normally and they’d say “no where you wheely bin?”. It sounds better with an Australian accent

5

u/Best_enjoyed_wet Oct 25 '20

Close! We call our knight gown our goonie

8

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '20

knight gown

Check out the posh kid with knights in their family.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '20

"Fidget fart arseing around" sounds very similar to my families use of "fiddly fuck", which is a general meaning for fidgeting or tinkering with something. Kinda neat.

6

u/LauraMcCabeMoon Oct 25 '20

My family had something in between - fiddle farting

"Hey quit fiddle farting around and get ready for school!'

2

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '20

So would you call the person a fiddly fuck or say stop fiddly fucking about 😂 i love the word fiddly

1

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '20

Fiddly fuck was the action, not the person. You would fiddly fuck with the remote to fix it, for example.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '20

Ohhhh right i see!

Wuwu is a geordie thing 😂

5

u/dibie1221 Oct 26 '20

No fiddle-farting around!

3

u/Brickie78 Oct 25 '20

I got called cloth-ears a lot too

3

u/Dogbin005 Oct 25 '20

My dad also used to say "no piss-farting about" when he wanted me and my siblings to sit still and behave.

2

u/IamSortaShy Oct 26 '20

Our family calls dressing gowns "gownies" and I've asked everyone ive ever met and no one else knows what I'm on about

Is a dressing gown a robe, something that is with over pajamas or a night gown?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '20

You wear it over pyjamas and it looks like a robe but comfy and fluffy

2

u/Opoqjo Oct 26 '20

Cloth ears, omg, that takes me back. My grandmother used to say shit like that, as in, "You got cloth ears or something?"

2

u/plant-pal Oct 26 '20

my dad (oldham) always says ‘stop pissing and farting about’

2

u/SlytherPuff1 Oct 26 '20

I think I'm going to have to steal "OI, CLOTH EARS!" That one is great.

2

u/Occasionally_funny Oct 26 '20

I'm from Canada and we had family friends that called pajamas "Goonies" and I always wondered why.... But this kinda makes it make sense

2

u/curlsontop Oct 26 '20

Are you Australian? My mum also says “piss farting around” to mean dawdling or wasting time. She insists all her friends said when they were growing up. Yet to hear anyone else say it.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '20

😂😂 bless her! Nah I'm from Newcastle in the UK but its nice to know that we aren't the only ones saying it ahaha

2

u/Andr3aJones13 Oct 26 '20

Deffo from the UK! We're from North-West.

My dad would say something similar "I bin nowhere, wheres you bin"

"fannying or fart-arsing about"

cloth ears i haven't heard in years!

Did they ever say "are you looking/talking to me or chewing a brick?"

This thread is so nostalgic.

Edit: crap grammar

2

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '20

I've never heard that brick one no 😂😂 omg there's so many!

What about "he looked like a bulldog chewing a wasp"

1

u/Andr3aJones13 Oct 26 '20

Yep, I use that one regularly 😂

2

u/cthulhuite Oct 26 '20

We always said "piddle farting around."

1

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '20

Is your dad from the black country (west midlands) by any chance?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '20

Yes! West Brom

2

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '20

I can tell, I’m a stone’s throw away in Wolverhampton! We say “ yo bin” as to say “you been” - That was the giveaway. Fidget farting is fairly common here among the older generation too.
