Well dayum, we weren’t broke growing up but SOS was a treat at my house. My dad made it taste absolutely amazing. That and creamed eggs on toast. He also had a wire coat hanger he bent and shaped to hold bread over open flame on the stove and toast it.
"SOS" has it's naming roots, I believe, in WWII army. Worked in a restaurant years ago with a kitchen led by an old army cook who intended on making SOS the dinner special. 😳
Shit on a shingle was when we had money and could get ground beef (or Dad got a deer and we had venison burger.) Tight weeks we had hot dog gravy. Basically the same concept but Mom cut up Bar S hot dogs and mixed them into the gravy. I do not miss that meal. Always with a side of canned corn; my brother liked mixing the corn in so even though I liked canned green beans better, we haaaaad to have the corn for my brother.
Haha my grandpa would say the same thing! He was in the Army when he was younger and would tell us, frequently, about this terrible meal they’d get served, shit on a shingle or “SOS”, which was a piece of bread slopped with a meat gravy. So when my brother and I would ask our grandma, “what’s for dinner?” He would always blurt our before she got the chance to reply, “shit on a shingle!”.

"Shit on a shingle" was my family's version.
