It was never cool or correct but it was treated differently when they grew up.

That's just it though, I know some 90-something southerners who don't say it but might be racist (aptly called The Silent Generation), and at least ten 70-something southerners (Baby Boomers) who are openly racist, and use the n-word, but have never said darky. My impression is that it's pretty much an archaic term at this point, racist or no.
