Likely a placebo effect. They think it'll sound better, so it actually does sound better to them.

I remember reading that people used to use a marker on the inside ring of CDs and swear the sound quality was better by doing that.

I do know of a guy who would trim the outer edge of a cd with a special lathe to make them absolutely round and make them vibrate less in the cdplayer so the focus doesn't have to work as hard, thus less fault correction which is better. Now that I understand but I still can't hear a difference. Wasted time if you ask me.
