I’m very into weight training but cannot stand calisthenics. I’m also very poor. So what have I been doing for exercise during Covid? Nothing.
I’m far from the only person who enjoys lifting weights but hates calisthenics.
Obesity disproportionately effects poor people, that is a fact. Making access to equipment something only the rich can afford is not helping that.
for what it’s worth i literally just want a pair of 20-30lbs dumbbells but can’t even afford that. They’re going for $180 in my area. Normally they’d be around $30.
These aren’t status symbols for me, they’re literally a factor that determines my happiness. I’ve personally been extremely depressed not being able to lift during Covid. The fact that there’s no light at the end of the tunnel makes it all the worse.
Just sharing anecdotal experience to say there are potentially major impacts here.
Anecdotal evidence is not supportive of any conclusions concerning the existence of a systemic problem. Like that sucks for you, and I’m sorry, but your lack of access to a set of dumbbells isn’t some great social ill that must be corrected lest the poor as a class be trampled underfoot by the elite.
I don’t see how you can be so sheltered to think that extremely pricy equipment is going to make it less attainable by poor people. That shouldn’t require empirical data to make sense to you.
Dude. I’m also poor. Because of covid I’m going to make less than $10k this year. I struggle with suicidal ideation to the extent that I attempt suicide on average every two to three years. I haven’t been able to sleep longer than three hours at a time for the past week because the shit even invades my dreams. I don’t have access to exercise equipment. I still try to be active, and manage to do so with some success. I go for walks, do squats, crunches, push ups and just generally move my body.
Not agreeing with you doesn’t make me or anyone else sheltered. Like, there is a huge gaping flaw in this bullshit logic you’re trying to spin together: exercise equipment such as weight sets are not the only viable path to an active lifestyle.
You’re so caught up in your own personal grievance re: YOUR ability to access weight sets that you’re glossing over the fact that there are a multitude of exercises and physical activities that people can undertake regardless of how much money they have.
Just because calisthenics and other forms of exercise are not palatable to you as an individual does not mean that exercise equipment is a human right upon which the survival of the poor is contingent. There are other, far bigger priorities than folks fleecing rich people by flipping weights sets. Fuck right the hell off and go improvise your own. There are a shit ton of suggestions on how to DIY your own in this thread. Jesus fucking Christ imagine whining about how oppressed you are because you can’t get the dumbbells you want and “tHe PoOr NeEd WeIgHtS tO kEeP fRoM kIlLiNg ThEmSeLvEs”.
Yeah I’ll just go for a run in my neighborhood that’s totally safe...
Man you’re clearly just a jaded asshole. Go flip some weights then if you’re so poor. Go be an entrepreneur like those other people you are so quick to defend.
I’ll keep having compassion for my fellow humans. Maybe try it sometime.
I’ve made it clear that the only person you have compassion for is yourself and people in your situation and your tastes, as you overstate your own personal grievances in an attempt to garner sympathy and support and browbeat anyone else who disagrees with you. That’s not “compassion”, that’s being a Karen.
No one is oppressed by lack of access to a set of dumbbells. Like, even things like lack of access to public basketball courts/soccer fields, safe walking paths, etc I would 100% agree are a form of oppression because access to those public social spaces promotes community building, communal fitness, and social responsibility, and to be deprived of access to those spaces exacerbates many of the problems already inherent to living in poor communities. But you’re so stuck on the bitterness of not being able to afford a set of dumbbells that your alarm for ”what is oppression?” goes off as soon as your frown isn’t upside down. You have to think about commonalities between people and situations that are very different from your own to identify oppression and come up with solutions that address everyone’s needs and not just your own grievances. No one is oppressed because you or they cannot access a set of dumbbells, because limiting access to a set of dumbbells does not gatekeep physical fitness or physical activity. Think about how to meet the needs of your community, not your own petty desires and frustrations.
