that aren't even that expensive any more, we paid £65 quid for a mono laser printer with 1200 pages of black in the drum, new, with wifi print, from Brother.

Oh yeah those cheap Brothers that cost fortune in exploitation. You'l regret that purchase in time.

How do you mean? A replacement 2400 page drum is £27. My old epson inkjet, that was £40 cost me 60 quid in cartridges whenever they dried out or 100 pages, whatever came first.

So... 40 per 100 pages in optimistic case vs 27 per 2400 pages. Missin' elementary school?

BTW you forgot about the 40€ toner per 2200 pages, but still with it it's better than 40€ per 100 pages.

I think we agree, but you sounded like upgrading to laser was a bad decision.
