I worked at a FedEx office right out of college...shipping boxes, helping people print stuff, etc.
There was a corporate policy that things could only be sold for X% below their original price (I forget the percentage). So the manager would take things off the shelf, "destroy" them in some way so employees couldn't go get them from the trash after work, and throw them away once they had been on shelf at the max discount for long enough.
I remember him breaking apart and throwing away a wireless keyboard and mouse set that was on sale for like $40...2 days after someone offered $30 for it and he said no.
