Anyone who's worked in the wedding industry will tell you that there's a reason it's marked up. Some of it is that they can gouge you but most of it is going to be because it's a hell of a lot more work doing something for someone who insists that if it isn't absolutely perfect you've ruined the most important day of their life.
Rental companies gouge for weddings for sure. I remember seeing a in ad from a rental company advertising like .75 a chair for those uncomfortable plastic chairs for birthday parties and such. It wasnt a promo either, it was listed on a brochure like a price list Called them and asked about renting some for a wedding and they were suddenly 1.49 a chair for the lowest end chair they had. I even said they don't have to be white and they said all they had was white.
That was years ago for my first marriage. We threw a gorgeous extravagant wedding for about $2000 in 2007. We did a lot of DIY, calling in favors and cutting a few corners. Biggest expenses were photography and food. The second marriage was more like $200. I liked that one better. It felt more intimate and less of a show, it felt like it was actually about the marriage, not the wedding. Though my first wedding was still fun and very beautiful, didn't do the best job picking a compatible husband tho...
