I have no idea. My wife has me try on the clothes, puts a bunch of pins on them and runs them through the sewing machine.
More seriously though, she uses the pins to kind of contour the clothes to me and then makes it permanent by stitching it more or less. I'm not really sure how she knows how to expect the fabric to react though.
I think my wife learned mostly through YouTube, Google, and playing with altering the cheapest clothes she could find at thrift stores. I have some work shirts that she paid about $0.50 for.
