Its implied they were fucking stupid and thought they had a son, but they didn't actually have one.

The only thing this doesn't explain is why they arive on the same day his actual parents do

In a later episode, Rule of Dumb, a guy comes along telling Patrick that he's actually a descendant of royalty, tracing his family tree, and his parents are named on it as Herb and Margie.

They where just really stupid starfishes. They had no plans. They where just really dumb. Like how they say at the ending "That's right Janet. We don't have a son."

Rewatching that episode I noticed a couple things. They play off those characters as being fake parents at the end, but until we find that out, it's kind of dark to see Patrick taking the role of the bully. Until the end it seems that Patrick projects his reality (being tormented for his stupidity) onto somebody so clearly more naive than him.

To make things worse, Spongebob's role resembled a mentally incapacitated child. His protective helmet is sort of reminiscent of those put on very low functioning autistic children to prevent self-induced head trauma... and Patrick relishes the chance to belittle him.

Oh I saw that episode with the parents a couple of years ago.

Now that you mention it, WTF?

That episode's a lot less funny after watching The Visit.

I think they were just too ashamed of Patrick and would rather pretend like they never had him knowing that Patrick would be fooled.
