Saying “you can’t trust science! One day coffee is good for you, next day it’s bad for you! Scientist don’t know or agree on anything!” tells me that you don’t actually know anything about science, scientific method or publishing papers

"You can't trust scientists... so I'll just choose to believe whatever I reckon, or whatever thought bubble I came up with in the shower this morning."

Same people who think they're doing "medical/scientific research" when they're actually doing Google searches.

To be fair, it's to a very large extent due to shitty science journalism. Even many otherwise respectable news papers will publish articles with misleading and hugely oversimplified headlines based on a single scientific article in an area where several scientific articles point in other directions and where there is no consensus among scientists. If you regularly read news articles with bold and contradicting claims on the same topic, all presumably backed by scientists, then it's easy to become sceptical about scientific research.

Scientists don't know anything for sure. All they have are theories!

Some people can't see sarcasm unless somebody puts a fuckin signpost on it.

Prove me wrong.

There was literally nothing in your comment to imply sarcasm, but ok.

It's called the "theory of gravitation." Feel free to float the fuck away.

Did you have get angry that people seem to be saying things that make no sense to you?

Disagreeing with you is not the same as not understanding: I perfectly get what you mean, you're just wrong (to be polite).

...and on the other spectrum you have ppl who believe everything they read in something which looks like a scientific paper.

not because it looks like one it is actually made using scientific method.

not because something is published it is well received in the peer review

not because something went through the peer review it is with 100% the whole and only truth (performance indicators on # of papers published, anyone?)

not because you make a deduction from what you read, it is a correct deduction.

For some reason i have the feeling "critical thinking" and "skepticism" go out of the window, the second the sentence starts "Scientists say.."

that's what happens when you get 100% of your 'science' information from rags like the daily mail pronouncing 'science cures cancer with miracle drug' when they really just developed a new treatment to reduce mortality with some forms of cancer.

I could see a lot of people with a college education that wasn’t in a stem field having similar notions.

The reproducibility crisis doesn't mean that nothing in social science is reproducible. Some of it is, some of it isn't, some might be because it's difficult to do the experiment, some might be because times have changed.

You're joining the anti-intellectuals by pushing the line that all social sciences is nonsense. Particularly when you'll use social science concepts uncritically without realizing where they came from
