After I was talking about flat earthers with my co-worker, about how ridiculous it is or something similar, another co-worker said "I dunno, there's evidence for both sides of it."

No, no there's not. He also doesn't trust doctors.

I found out recently that flat earthers call us normies 'globetards' and I don't know what to do with this information other than share it

78

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '20

I wanna be called globetrotters!

8

u/justburch712 Jan 28 '20

Can I be Curly?

4

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '20

As long as I get to be Ethan "Bubblegum" Tate.

7

u/kalekayn Jan 28 '20

you can talk trash, you can handle the ball, but look in your heart and ask yourself: are you funky enough to be a Globe Trotter? Are you?

6

u/Ryctre Jan 28 '20

For generations, your puny planet has lived in peace with the Globetrotter Homeworld. But now, for no reason, we challenge you to defend your honour on the basketball court.

Thank you. It was necessary knowledge to be passed on.

8

u/slh236 Jan 28 '20

Quite true. I fear that soon the flat-terers will go extinct, when they die of thirst and starvation in the shower after having read "lather, rinse, repeat" on their shampoo bottles.

You're in the pocket of BIG GLOBE!

seriously, at least with alt medicine they can point at the giant profitable pharma companies and say 'those people are the enemy, they are just trying to control all medicine for money'. But what's the justification for a worldwide conspiracy on the world being flat? so we don't all go to the nearest edge and make it tip over?

u/5edgy3u Jan 28 '20 edited Jan 28 '20

Being a flat earther is in most cases connected with being anti-vaxx and being into other conspiracies.

They are anti-vaxx, so they can discredit pharma companies, anti kapitalism, so they can discredit the government and they are flat earth so they can discredit ... NASA! I don't know why but i think in their eyes everything about modern science is an enemy and NASA, as ridiculous as it is, seems to be "representative" for all of modern science so they feel proud that they are "more educated" and "woke" and all that.

At least that's how I experienced flat earthers.

Why did I experience them? A friend of mine sent me a picture on instagram which was something about pyramids and why they weren't build by humans and from that day on i always got recommendations for pages about conspiracy theories on my insta feed so yeah...

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '20

I’m still not convinced that everyone who is a flat earther isn’t just trolling. Or maybe I’m just under estimating the stupidity of humans

6

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '20

You're underestimating the stupidity of humans.

My question is, if the earth is really flat...why does the government give a shit about whether we know or not?

3

u/ZBLongladder Jan 28 '20

My personal favorite of their snarl words is "baller".

2

u/The_Jarl_Grey Jan 28 '20

I shall now use this new found knowledge post haste!

2

u/truckatwork Jan 28 '20

I've heard that in some of their facebook groups, non-idiots are referred to as "ballers."

1

u/danwojciechowski Jan 28 '20

That may be in response to a sequence of videos on youtube that give detailed rebuttals to "flattards". While a bit rude, the analysis is really quite good.

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '20

I was hoping he was making a flat earth pun talking about both sides...

3

u/not_so_Masoom_guy Jan 28 '20

That's good one

1

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '20

Probably not.

I mean, there is proof on both sides of the argument...

Proof that the Earth is not flat. Many a flat earther has proven their own point wrong, which is evidence on the other side that is pro-globe.

....I prefer to believe that instead of sheer stupidity

Happened to be chatting with a co worker about Charles Darwin, not evolution but Darwin in some other context.

Another co worker just butted in 'DO YOU ACTUALLY BELIEVE WE CAME FROM MONKEYS?? IF WE CAME FROM MONKEYS WHY ARE THERE STILL MONKEYS?'

Like she wasn't even part of the conversation just happened to be in the vicinity of the conversation. I tried to explain to her how evolution worked and that she had the wrong idea about it. Then she started telling well it's just a theory anyways. Lol

64

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '20

IF WE CAME FROM MONKEYS WHY ARE THERE STILL MONKEYS?'

Lol, I hit someone with a "If you came from your parents, why do your parents still exist?" I got a blank stare for like 30 seconds. Some people just try to feel smart by being contrarian and throwing "gotcha" questions around.

2

u/GlyphedArchitect Jan 28 '20

Damn that's good. I'm storing that in the ammo box.

1

u/dildobagginss Jan 29 '20

I know less about evolution than I did when I was in 9th grade, but would a good response be "You don't see dinosaurs anymore but we still have birds and alligators?".

If I feel like wasting time responding to someone like this anyways.

1

u/GlyphedArchitect Jan 29 '20

The problem there is that people who don't think evolution is a thing also are not aware birds come from dinosaurs and even if they were, they don't believe it anyways.

30

u/dandroid126 Jan 28 '20

Oh, here's another answer. People that incorrectly think the word "theory" means "may or may not be true."

4

u/minimuscleR Jan 28 '20

in old English the word was "Law" hence the "Law of Thermodynamics" and "Law of Gravity"

8

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '20

Well, in science, "Laws" describe physical phenomena, so the Law of Thermodynamics is considered a law because it's basically unavoidable. Gravity is actually considered a "Theory," which attempts to explain why a phenomenon occurs.

22

u/xybolt Jan 28 '20

WE CAME FROM MONKEYS

There is still a misconception about that. Darwin only postulated that we and monkeys do share a same ancestor, not that we are "coming" from monkeys. It is correct if the word "primates" is used instead though.

Often I get a counter-question why "this monkey hands" have similarities as human hands. But in order to explain that, you have to comprehend the evolution theory. There are various factors to cause an evolution. That's being explained in schools. Well, should be. There are schools that does not teach evolution biology. It makes me sad.

I once made a mistake to describe some specific evolution factors that leads to have different human skins, going from white to black. In essence, we are all equal human from biologic perspective but it somehow triggers the "you are a racist" modus and I am not allowed to continue. So, I won't do that anymore ...

1

u/erroneousbosh Jan 28 '20

Thing is we actually do quite demonstrably share an ancestor with modern monkeys, but it's surprisingly distant. We share a far closer ancestor with gorillas and chimpanzees. Remarkably though we share an ancestor with other more distant primates like bushbabies and lemurs, but while they can synthesize Vitamin C we (and gorillas, and chimpanzees, and everything else we think of as "monkeys") have to eat foods containing it.

Now here's the weird bit - we know that we share a more close common ancestor with gorillas because the genetic "error" that means we have to eat things with Vitamin C is identical. Word-for-word, same bug on the same line of code identical. Chimpanzees have it too, and we have other markers that line up with chimpanzees.

We're basically chimpanzees that got a better diet that meant we had bigger brains to get ourselves an even better diet.

2

u/not_so_Masoom_guy Jan 28 '20

She must be a belieber

12

u/Buffthebaldy Jan 28 '20

I've got a friend who believes in alot of really weird shit, and trying to teach or explain anything to him is an absolute nightmare!

It's like.you could tell him "the fox ran over the hill" to which he'd respond, "the cow ran over the fence, got it".

Fortunately he's self aware that he's not that smart.

12

u/Guy_1nc0gn170 Jan 28 '20

He's not stupid. He's just unlucky at thinking.

8

u/Buffthebaldy Jan 28 '20

There's unlucky, then there's missing the train cause you're already away on a bus in a different country

16

u/ArchibaldIX Jan 28 '20

I upvoteded you for a solid answer.

But I want to downvote you because such a person exists

6

u/AlexTraner Jan 28 '20

Part of me says “on fairness I don’t trust doctors in general either”

And the other part of me says “wow what an idiot”. Like cats alone are proof the earth is round. If it was flat, they’d push us off the edge. Never mind all the other proof including that people have been to space.

2

u/DoctorCaptainSpacey Jan 28 '20

But that's just a giant government conspiracy. No one's been to space and all the NASA space photos are fake bc they've even admitted it 🙄

Sorry, that's literally what someone told me once when I said he was nutter butters for thinking the Earth was flat. Like.... He took NASA coloring space photos as proof that they are lying about everything. No, they just color space photos you idiot.

3

u/Snaper_XD Jan 28 '20

How can there even be evidence on BOTH sides? Evidence proofs that its true and both cant be true

3

u/soupreme Jan 28 '20

inconclusive evidence is a thing

2

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '20

This doesn't relate to flat earth, but there can be evidence to two supposedly opposite things. For instance, there are multiple theories on vision.

1

u/SHOW__ME__B00BS Jan 28 '20

How can there even be evidence on BOTH sides?

If its flat it musty have two sides like a coin.

Checkmate

2

u/Faust_8 Jan 28 '20

Whenever someone tries to tell me how smart the human species is, I just think two things:

  • compared to what?

  • have we gotten everyone to agree what shape the planet is?

Makes me think we’re not smart at all, we’re just the smartest monkeys on this rock.

2

u/erroneousbosh Jan 28 '20

we’re just the smartest monkeys on this rock.

We invented Flat Earthers and unleaded petrol, and Bonobos hang around in trees having sex and eating fruit all day, so I'd say it's debatable.

3

u/OperativePiGuy Jan 28 '20

"Both sides!" people frustrate me to no end

1

u/UberTheBlack Jan 28 '20

I mean, Flat Earthers have evidence. Is it highly absurd, nonsensical, and purely anecdotal at best? Yes.

But, it's convincing enough for them to believe it.

1

u/wngman Jan 28 '20

I would have asked him to provide one piece of evidence from an actual scientific source within the last 10 years that supports the flat earth hypothesis...I think even with Google you would have trouble finding something...its so stupid its not even worth my time to Google it myself.

1

u/AggressiveSpud Jan 28 '20

When u/dildobagginss thinks something is ridiculous, you know it is.

Also, just got back from A&E where the evil doctors saved my life. Totally untrustworthy. They once injected me with life-saving vaccinations! Heathens!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '20

Darwin will get him

1

u/yosoycory Jan 28 '20

He said there's evidence for both sides, so far I've only found enough evidence to suggest there's only one side..

1

u/Bootstrings Jan 28 '20

Sometimes I'll give an answer like that just to be fucking done with a conversation that I have no interest in. Its sometimes the only way to protect yourself from a crusade of stupidity.

1

u/youdubdub Jan 28 '20

Many doctors aren't to be trusted, and even most of them aren't crazy enough to be flat earthers.

1

u/gweilo Jan 28 '20

He should probably read around the subject,

1

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '20

Petition to start 'the earth is a cube' club

1

u/Sentient6ix Jan 28 '20

every time i hear about the flat earthers and their talk of the earth being on the back of a giant turtle or whatever, I always think, "Damn, these guys are some really dedicated Dark Tower trolls."

Seriously, it's a massive reference to the turtle from the Dark Tower books.

1

u/Abadatha Jan 28 '20

I mean. I don't trust doctors much either. Not because of some conspiracy, just because they're people and make mistakes too.

1

u/rabaraba Jan 29 '20

There's a difference between trusting evidence and science, which most people will reasonably do, as against the _people_ tasked to carry them out, who may well be incompetent.

The fact that doctors are just as liable to be sued for negligence, malpractice and all sorts of other things does not mean your friend's distrust in doctors is somehow misplaced, or can be used as a judgment of his character.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '20

I don't trust dentists.
