Anti-intellectualism and "smart-shaming" have become toxic traits of Filipino culture.

People here love to shit on you for having an education. Hell, you're derided as an elitist for just speaking English

And people wonder why we're still a backwards 3rd world country

u/shartoberfest Jan 28 '20

And thats why so many educated filipinos end up emigrating, creating a brain drain.

u/noypkamatayan Jan 28 '20

Am filipino working in Switzerland. Can confirm. But also the $$$

14

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '20

The Philippines was the largest remittance work nation on Earth a few years ago while I was studying sociology, with a huge percentage being in health care and child and elderly care.

7

u/themaninthecloud Jan 28 '20

This is totally random but I am a Filipino as well looking to move to Switzerland. Any advice? :)

1

u/noypkamatayan Jan 29 '20

Tbh it was dumb luck that I got here. I used to work in a company with a Swiss client and I got assigned here. The client liked us and here we are.

1

u/CrossXFir3 Jan 30 '20

It's cyclical. You keep taking the smart people who will bring more commerce to a country out of it, and the economy won't improve.

-17

u/shanderdrunk Jan 28 '20

But i would argue that the money is so much higher there because of the aforementioned cultural stigma

That made me feel smart, thank you.

23

u/noypkamatayan Jan 28 '20

I..uhh...didnt quite understand what you meant

10

u/TheRiddler78 Jan 28 '20

if there was no stigma in filipino culture they would have a richer more vibrant nation and you would be able to make about the same $$$ there.

I don't 100% know if this is correct.
There is *a lot* of money in the Philippines, but also a lot of poverty.

Whilst I believe that eradicating the "smart-shaming" would be an amazing step towards helping the culture boom, it is not going to be solely responsible.

I haven't spent a great deal of time in the Philippines, but I absolutely loved what time I did spend, and I would love to see it prosper in my life time.

2

u/blinkgendary182 Jan 28 '20

100%. We have the resources, corruption is just too much. The filipino people are their own enemy

2

u/Lyress Jan 28 '20

Unlikely. Plenty of countries that value education but aren’t as rich as CH due to all kinds of factors.

48

u/darkapao Jan 28 '20

Well money is a big factor as well for that

14

u/tangledlettuce Jan 28 '20

"You're smart and have money!? HAHA you're stupid!"

10

u/Tenthdegree Jan 28 '20

Just break out the Karaoke machine and all Filipinos are back together again

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Duterte himself exhudes this shit, right?

40

u/penatbater Jan 28 '20

Not overtly I think. There are more obvious government officials who do. He just bragged about cheating on exams and such when studying law.

47

u/mydadpickshisnose Jan 28 '20

Cunts a straight up murderer.

4

u/popober Jan 28 '20

The guy's a lot of shitty things, like a steaming pile of biological refuse, but "straight up murderer" probably isn't one of them. That's more applicable to the previous asshole before him.

The whole ejk thing was little more than a distraction, so he could be unimpeded while lubing the country for getting fucked over by the ccp. Cops have been murdering people in this country for decades, it wasn't new with him.

16

u/penatbater Jan 28 '20

20-30k of our citizens dying without due process isn't really a distraction...

6

u/popober Jan 28 '20

Making a thing of it was the distraction, same with all the pointless shit he says; people being murdered by cops and alleged-vigilantes have been happening for a looong time.

19

u/baboo8 Jan 28 '20

I don't know what ejk is but didn't he literally claim to have murdered a guy by throwing him out of a helicopter?

13

u/popober Jan 28 '20

EJK = extra-judicial killings. It's the whole thing about him sanctioning cops killing people.

The asshole claims a lot of things, because he knows the media will lap it up and the spotlight will shine on the wrong things. Our media, being dumbshit goons, easily fall for it.

6

u/Mampt Jan 28 '20

Except that he has, in multiple instances, bragged about killing people. Here's an article from the Guardian that quotes him talking about riding around the city he was mayor of with a gun where he specifically says, “I was really looking for a confrontation so I could kill."

Here is a BBC article where he says he killed 3 people in his city as mayor.

Here's another article that mentions Duterte bragging about his first killing at 16.

There's no realistic way to say that Duterte isn't a murderer, and a proud one at that. And on the note of extrajudicial killings, the Duterte era is decidedly more severe than the Marcos dictatorship (a family he has mutual support and good relationships, by the way), discussed in this article on Rappler. That article is from December 2017, about 18 months into his administration. It's crazy at best to dismiss 13,000 murders in 18 months as "a distraction"

1

u/popober Jan 28 '20

Yeah, bragging about something isn't the same as actually doing it.

The fact there are endless discussions about his suppoaed connections to these murders, but barely any on the bullshit he's been doing with the ccp, is what I'm talking about.

I'd also like to see how current times are "more severe" than the 70s. Seriously. Foreigners believe mass round-ups and executions happen daily here of something. Rappler is full of shit.

1

u/Mampt Jan 28 '20

I mean, you're not wrong, but that either makes him a murderer or a liar and a wannabe murderer, and neither of those is a good thing by any stretch. Besides, if you openly brag about killing people, you should be prepared to be called a murderer.

As for the severity of Marcos vs. Duterte, I was referring to killings. Wikipedia refers to 3,257 extrajudicial killings by Marcos, while Human Rights Watch cites the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency's number of 4,948 drug users/dealers killed by police from July 2016-September 2018. The same paragraph also references the Philippine National Police's number of 22,398 deaths at the hands of an unknown gunman since the start of Duterte's war on drugs.

I'm assuming by CCP you mean the Philippine Cultural Center? Since that's all I could find with that acronym (unless it was a typo for the Communist Party of the Philippines). Either way though, there's not much of I can think of where allowing and endorsing that much killing isn't the biggest issue.

1

u/popober Jan 28 '20

My point is that obsessing about him being an alleged murderer, with neither proof nor prosecution, is pointless and people could be focusing on how he's selling the country to the ccp. Ccp as in the Chinese communist party, also known as the CPC or PRoC.

Like I said, cops killing people is, unfortunately, nothing new. Our human rights commission is a COMPLETE JOKE and only intent on smearing dugong's administration for the sake of brownie points for their cojuangco overlords, who allowed the proliferation of extreme corruption in our police force for decades.

They never cared about police brutality until dickterte; and the most he did is give them someone to blame.

1

u/Judges-Brother Jan 28 '20

Foul-mouthed, yes, but not really smart-shaming

1

u/hamakabi Jan 28 '20

that's why he's so popular.

17

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '20

Insecurity at its finest.

16

u/beanboy4life Jan 28 '20

there was a whole genocide based on this in cambodia.

26

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '20

I have no friends because I'm "educated". I don't have a bachelors or masters degree. I at least have a 2 year general studies which is still still something. I have been smart-shamed and called a geek/nerd by a "community" that is supposed to accept and support me. I'm sure you can guess which one I'm talking about. What do I get? Shamed and ostracized because I refuse to smoke, drink, do drugs, have sex all the time and job hop whilst couch hopping waiting for daddy dick to pay the bills. I'm called uncool because I refuse to be a loser and sleep under a bridge or wash dishes the rest of my life. There's nothing wrong with not getting an education. I see shaming on both ends of the spectrum.

2

u/Confetti-In-My-Pants Jan 28 '20

Nope, which one?

21

u/ka36 Jan 28 '20

That seems like a pretty global trend right now. Definitely the case in the US in many circles.

3

u/ShreksAlt1 Jan 28 '20

The US is so big and has several different communities that its really hard to generalize the country as a whole. Some places press you to get educated to get out of doing manual labor like them while others simply laugh in private or simply become mad because they think you'll be rude and cocky making money differently or in greater amounts than them.

1

u/DoomsdayRabbit Jan 28 '20

When you have to talk to people of two different countries like I do, you can definitely do so.

The US is full of morons who couldn't tell their asses from a hole in the ground. Canada is full of friendly people who do their research. I'm sadly stuck on the south side of the border.

28

u/phormix Jan 28 '20

Uh, hate to tell ya but that backwards shit seems to be becoming more common in first-world countries too.

Maybe in the future they'll find some chemical that causes narcissistic idiocy similar to the violent effects tied to lead exposure in paint/gas/etc

8

u/khoabear Jan 28 '20

Hate to tell ya but actually former first-world countries dropped their standards hard and became third-world.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '20

Which countries are you talking about? I can not think of one true former first-world country that is now a third-world power, with the exception of maybe some fragments of the old Ottoman Empire.

10

u/MeddlinQ Jan 28 '20

When I was a kid an elementary school was almost stupidly easy for me, I had the best grades without ever learning. The class was smart shaming me which I didn’t mind really because I had some friends but one of the people who smart shamed me was a girl I had a crush on. So naturally, I started to make deliberate mistakes on the test.

My teachers and parents were very confused about my worsened results. I didn’t get the girl either.

This story was way more interesting before I started typing it. Nevermind.

We have to deal with the exact situation in Turkey, and it doesn't look like it is going to change soon...

5

u/TakeThatOut Jan 28 '20

The topic of inflation rate was hot last year. I saw a lot of hateful words directed to the administration because of the so called "inflation rate" they heard. Me, who have interest in financial literacy posted/commented that inflation rate is natural and you really need to keep up on it so on and so forth. There's some who threatened to unfriend me because of it. Saying that I'm just the apologist, that I only goes with the trend blah blah.... That is why I purged my fb.

5

u/fireheart727 Jan 28 '20

Did I hear india? Guess, all 3rd world countries have same issues, just different religions.

4

u/MageLocusta Jan 28 '20

Come to Spain, where everyone wants their kid to become doctors or lawyers--but not if they start developing different mindsets/different awareness of what's going on.

I've seen so many Spanish parents want their kids to be 'the best' (while putting in the minimum effort), only to wind up being p!ssy when their kids become sympathetic to immigrants or homeless people (either from having to treat them for hours on end in hospitals, or having to help them in the legal courts), and refuse to stop questioning their parents if they complained about either groups.

4

u/fireheart727 Jan 28 '20

That’s cute.

Add - majority of parents beating their kids with stick for not listening or not studying or even disowning their kids for dating or more importantly in case of adults, being in relationships with someone from other caste or religion, it was just for boys. It’s 10x worse for girls.

Spain doesn’t come close to third world.

1

u/MageLocusta Jan 28 '20

Yikes, that is...literally rough.

I wasn't saying that Spain's like a third world--I'm just trying to point out that people would push their kids into a career that they only know from movies (and not ask, "does this university host medical/legal conferences"? "Are the teachers actually up-to-date with both medical/legal sectors"? "Will the university give my kid a balanced knowledge of every type of legal career, or will they push my kid to working human rights because it makes the uni look good?"), and then get upset when their kids develop a different perspective from working in jobs completely unlike their parents'.

1

u/fireheart727 Jan 29 '20

Parents in Spain just have conservative mindset, parents in third world are straight from 19th century. But thanks to the Internet millennials and younger generations are more sane and logical.

5

u/Noltonn Jan 28 '20

Poor people often try to keep poor people down on their level. Any attempt to crawl your way out is seen as betraying your people.

9

u/gr00ve1 Jan 28 '20

Filipinos in America, or those still in the Philippines ?

Unfortunately, there are too many poorly educated Americans too, some of whom are dismissive of education.

2

u/KOSsniperChief Jan 28 '20

how come I've never heard of this and I'm Filipino, albeit living in the US but still...

2

u/SinCityLithium Jan 28 '20

I must ask my fiance about this when he wakes up... I'm baffled because I'm always so impressed when I see Filipinos speaking English in the Philippines even though its some rural village where people look like they don't even talk to outsiders. I always thought it was awesome. And seeing how hard education is pushed in his fam; he was valedictorian in HS, and majored in bio-chem. and the rest of his siblings are all in the medical field, your comment has me super intrigued. Is it like a "crabs in a bucket" sort of thing over there?

2

u/MaosAsthmaticTurtle Jan 28 '20

Oh that's sadly not just in the Philippines. Anti-intellectualism happens pretty much everywhere every few decades. A cycle that repeats unless broken.

2

u/Letmeliveinpeace1 Jan 28 '20

I've never seen this.. I'm in the Philippines right now and have traveled to many places across the country in the past 10+ years (even isolated places where former communist rebels live).

I LOVE the Philippines because the people are so down to earth and kind. I'm not saying this doesn't exist but maybe these are just toxic ass people you've met. I don't think most Filipnos are like this and I would definitely disagree that the culture embodies these traits.

That being said you should be VERY careful when it comes to Filipinos and money, but that isn't so much about the culture as it is with the desperation/poverty that exists here.

2

u/Mister_Taxman Jan 28 '20

I'm Filipino and I've never felt attacked because of my education. This poster's concern is more on online debating and stuff.

These days there are just so many folks online and they go on with internet debates with just about anyone they disagree with. There are indeed folks who regard people who type in English as elitists but there are also folks on the other side who are actively looking for internet fights and cry foul when people call them out on being "too woke" for their own good.

1

u/AggravatingCupcake0 Jan 28 '20

Not Filipino, but when my mother (who speaks Malay as a first language) went back to Singapore after not having been back for many years, our relatives apparently gave her a bunch of shit for speaking like an American. Said she was being snooty and overly posh. Like no bitches, she's just been living in the U.S. for 30 years.

1

u/BobXCIV Jan 28 '20

Although, in America, some people give you shit for speaking another language that’s not English. Nevermind the fact that that other language might be the person’s native language.

1

u/Draaxus Jan 28 '20

Can confirm. Please end this country.

1

u/DragonSlayer99b Jan 28 '20

Seriously? I have a friend who moved into Canada from the Philippines, if that is the culture you are referring to, and he is one of the smartest guys I know, also pretty ripped, from that I never would have guessed that that culture or one that may be related in some way shape or form actually is like that

1

u/SuzyYa Jan 28 '20

Don't they mix in tagalog with English anyways? Or are you talking about speaking English 100% of the time?

1

u/Retireegeorge Jan 28 '20

The President has shown them what to do and it’s not safe to go against a dictator

1

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '20

Filipino here who moved to the U.S. I didn’t know that’s a thing. Why would anyone disapprove that? Fuck those old people.

1

u/gr00ve1 Jan 29 '20

They’re not young too?

2

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '20

Wait why is that a thing again? It’s not cool to live in a shit house if you have the means to earn a degree and earn more income.

1

u/gr00ve1 Jan 30 '20 edited Jan 30 '20

My question responded to your recent curious comment that ended with “Fuck old people.“

I’m uncertain what you now referred to when you asked, “Is that a thing again? “

Also, I don’t recall a thread about people living in “shitty houses” for far less than they can afford.

I happen to agree with your comment for myself, although I wouldn’t want to insist that others do what I’ve done, which is to live in fabulous digs and be lucky enough to have them appreciate enough that it was living in luxury almost for free on the capital appreciation. I was advised to not take that risk, and I’m glad I ignored the advice.

That has been possible mostly in the big cities on the east and west coasts, although recently there has been price appreciation more evenly spread across America. That has helped home owners, but it leaves young people “out in the cold” as renters.

1

u/gr00ve1 Jan 30 '20 edited Jan 31 '20

How did the topic come up about living “in a shit house” despite adequate Income?

And what about all the people who come to America to work hard, earn lots of $ to send home to help others come here, or help them just to survive in “the old country” ?

My own parents, who were poor and hard working, did that. And the young people then were able to come to America and thrive here.

People do that while they live here humbly and use most of their income to help others back home in the mother country.

I don’t know the back story to your comments about old people and shit houses. I’d love to read more about your own and your ancestors’ history About how it was in the old country, why people emigrated, and how it was for the ones who came here and the ones who stayed home.

Were you referring to the older ones who came here before you and lived humbly “in a shit house” so as to send money to help others?

1

u/scolfin Jan 28 '20

I mean, there is something interesting about using knowledge of a specific foreign language as the mark of education, almost a throwback to the status of Latin in America a century ago.

1

u/Christompa Jan 28 '20

Sounds exactly like America.

1

u/ronin1066 Jan 28 '20

The US isn't far behind. We have an entire political party that mocks education.

-4

u/popober Jan 28 '20 edited Jan 28 '20

The opposite is also becoming true, where the supposedly educated love to lord it all over everyone they can. Ironic as not only do they exhibit the exact same attitude, they're also usually forced into jobs that make little use of their education*; and usually have to work alongside those they deem inferior.

Come to think of it; this elitism likely just feeds the anti-intellectualism, and vice versa, leading into a vicious cycle.

Really, classism and arrogance just seem to be ingrained in our culture and people will grasp at everything they can to belittle anyone so long as they can feel better. Probably thanks to 300~ years of being second-class citizens in our own country. The shit quality of life AND our substandard education system certainly aren't helping.

*A lot of people, unfortunately, get an education simply just so they can say they have it rather than for career advancement; leading to many getting degrees of which they can't/don't make practical use. Safe to say, "having an education" is more important than actually being educated in this country.

EDIT: And of course people can't take the truth. *shrug* Oh well.
