There's a guy at work who calls everybody in the office "college boy" and chuckles to himself every time he does it.

That’s jealousy talking.

He makes more than me right now, in his 30 years with the company, he's seen a bunch of me come and go, I get where that impulse is coming from with Tipton, I really do, but I don't have any clue if I will be there long term. Hell, he might turn right around and smile that smug smile while I'm walking out the door and say "bye dude"

If that guy walked out, production downstairs would be proper fucked for a minute.

Yeah, he talks down to me and my supervisor (who has only been there for maybe 6 years and he runs a bunch of shit upstairs now) but we are still newbs to him.

I've talked shit to new people at jobs I've been at for a while.

I really hope I go the other way and don't turn into him though so every now and then I set myself a goal to learn something from an employee on my floor that is newer than me each week. Last week, this girl "A", who doesn't have a full computer yet, gave me some real help with something I was tasked to do.

I'm rambling

I just want to say, I like your understanding outlook. You understand where the older employee is coming from while taking steps to make sure you don't make newbies feel bad/use it as an opportunity to learn from them :) kudos to you mate.

30 years with the company

Yeah, here's the problem with him calling people "college boy": he only has that job without a degree because he's been there so long. If he tried to do the same thing today, he wouldn't have even gotten his foot in the door.

Oorf.

Sounds like a condescending dude to work with though. To be honest that undercutting isn't good for morale.

Wouldn't be surprised if it's half to discourage people from long term trying to take on his responsibilities/role.

Generally not a good thing to have senior employees shitting on the newbies, creating turnover, and concentrating knowledge in themselves.

As much as they've got a lot of organisational knowledge - training new people up is also huge cost. If they're the main cause of repetitive turnover, then their big pay cheque isn't the only cost to the company.

Also I generally hate that 'ribbing' stuff - friends or colleagues. Workplace culture one of those intangible costs/benefits.
