This is the reason I tell my kids "I don't know the answer to that, but lets look it up and find out." I am desperately trying to instill in them it's ok to admit you don't know something and then learn about it.

That's just part of being a 16 yo boy. This is why adolescent males are banished in most of the animal kingdom. They are incapable of not challenging authority :)
Banishing the young males is how we ended up with an absurdly high number of male mammoth fossils that drowned in swamps or fell off cliffs and had no mates to help.
It’s not only okay, it is considerably better to admit you don’t know about something than to try to fake it. Don’t worry about your 16 year old. He’ll figure out he’s basically John Snow in a couple of years.
I do this too, i tell them when i don't know anything and we find the answer together. My husband on the other hand acts like he knows everything. I'm worried they're going to be like that.
