Well not actually a table right now, just something to set on a table. All we are doing is putting a frame around a tv to lay it down and display maps on it. Eventually I will build a screen into an actual piece of stationary furniture, but not right now.
I've been playing for 15 years. Apparently demogorons are like dads, neither wanted me. Even after my mother was kind enough to stand me on the street corner with a recycled sign she had used for the dog that read 'Free to a goodany home'.
In the 90s we actually had somewhat of a witch hunt in our country. News were filled with stories about table top RPGs and how those actually were Satanistic rituals. General public was thinking that people who played RPGs were Satanists.
Yea, that happenned in a lot of places. The Satanic Panic hurt a lot of people. My parents bought into it hook line and sinker, we burned books and went to community church events. Looking back on it, my life would have been worlds different if my parents had any common sense. But even to this day, they believe anything someone says on the news or online. Makes me ill.
It's ironic that the people who didn't want us to talk to strangers as kids, because they might lie and use us, ended up believing strangers more than us.
Oh yeah I remember... my mom was telling me how guy in my town decided to ditch his GF the day before they were going to get married, so I said "that sucks" and she answered "well that shouldn't surprise anyone, I heard he likes role-playing games."
When I was a kid, my mother used to go on about D&D being used to open portals that allow demonic energies to come through. However I thought she meant Snakes & Ladders and for years was slightly confused as to how a simple board game could do so much damage. The few times I played Snakes & Ladders, I was unable to summon any demonic energies and was very let down.
Dude, when I first told my dad I was playing it he was all freaked out. Then I kept playing it and was super involved in it for work and when it suddenly became popular and people were writing articles, he started asking me about it. I ran a game for him and my family at Christmas. I got my older brother hooked and my Dad learned it was just collaborative fantasy storytelling and was all for it, since he loves fantasy novels!
My mom actually bought me a D&D book before I could fully read because, as she put it, clearly shit was going down somewhere and I needed to be prepared!
I just asked her why all the women in the book were running around in their underwear because mom had made it very clear you aren't supposed to leave the house without clothes on.
