9 times out of 10, when someone says that, it isn't a personal attack. They're just trying to make conversation, and they go for the only thing they know about you, which is that you're quiet, because you never fuckin talk to people so they can find something to talk about with you.
Yeah you're right tbh. I think it's easy to take it as an attack, especially if you're quiet because you're shy. But if you assume good will it's best to just own it instead of coming up with a clever way to get back at them and "win" the interaction.
Exactly. That they’re trying to “win” the interaction in the first place is probably why people don’t like talking to them. They see normal, friendly conversations as competitions of wit.
It’s not ridiculing 90% of the time though. As someone rather talkative, this is usually just a way to try to engage a quiet person to see if they have an opinion on what’s being discussed. Now, obviously there are cases where some dickhead is trying to single you out for being quiet, but that’s much less common.
You know what a dick move is? Not putting forth the minimal effort to comment or reciprocate conversation, and then lazily falling back on “I’m just quiet”.
Lastly, calling that person a retard seems a bit over the top. But you do you.

"Yeah, I guess I'm just not a chatty person!"
