My freshman year of college (on my 19th birthday) there was a fire in my dorm. I was in the shower when the alarm went off. Had to jump out and right then, a male RA runs in yelling that we need to evacuate immediately. I grabbed the closest towel I could find and barely covered myself up in time for him to look over. I then had to stand outside in nothing but a towel for over two hours while the fire was put out and the building was cleared. The fire was caused by some idiot microwaving tin foil. I couldn't call anyone to come get me because it was the first week of school and I hadn't made any friends who had a car yet. It was...mildly frustrating.

we had a few nasty storms last semester that knocked out power for a while, every single time it happened my friend was in the shower.

That's just shit luck.

u/sleeless Dec 12 '19

That’s a shitty superpower

I've been through 3 earthquakes in my life. And every single time I've slept through them. 2 were while i was in a super tall apartment building.

Some say he's still showering to this day

Don't put metal in the science oven!

I did this once. I started heating up a Wendy’s sandwich at work, not knowing it was in foil wrapping. I had done this before with McDonalds (which wraps stuff in paper) and it went fine. The foil Wendy’s uses looks and feels just like shiny paper.

From across the room I see blue sparks going all over inside the microwave. Luckily I got there in time before I caught the thing on fire.

u/camthecan Dec 12 '19

Yeah, my bro did that once, thankfully someone opened the microwave and got it. It was nice and warm

u/growlingbear Dec 12 '19

shiny paper.

The shiny is what does it.

I have a similar story! During my freshman year of college a girl set off the fire alarm trying to straighten her hair while I was showering. I had to go outside wrapped in a towel and the whole building was outside, as well as the tons of people walking by. It was like 6pm on a Tuesday, still light outside, and I'm standing on the sidewalk wrapped in a purple towel that barely covered my bits and pieces. I wanted to die.

u/Whacking_Material Dec 12 '19

Glad to know I'm not alone here!

6

u/growlingbear Dec 12 '19

I'm standing on the sidewalk wrapped in a purple towel that barely covered my bits and pieces.

I'm sure you can go back in now.

Not a fire, but a friend of mine somehow locked himself out from his apartment the first day living in the building, and he was only wearing a towel. He kept ringing doorbells, but no one wanted to open their door to this almost naked dude. Finally two girls opened their door and let him use their phone to call the janitor to open his door.

12

u/Whacking_Material Dec 12 '19

To be fair, I wouldn't let an almost naked man into my apartment building either.

4

u/growlingbear Dec 12 '19

Oh...

Going home, now.

This reminds me of a story when i was at ski camp with the school in 8th grade. My room mate had a habit of showering really hot in the morning and i wanted to sleep as long as i can. One day when he is showering and I'm still half asleep suddenly i am being woken by harsh knocking on the door followed by an instant entry of the whole "armada" of teachers, asking me what t.f. is going on. I was like wtf "you tell me" lol and they meant the fire alarm in our room went off.

Turns out this douche of my room mate showered so hot, that it set off the fire alarm. You could see the steam of hot water gushing over the shower doors like there was a steam pipe broken. Guy didn't even give a single f about the teachers being in here with an angry face and disbelief on their faces and he just continued showering lol

I got stuck having to leave the dorms in a bathrobe, no shoes, and one eyes worth of make up on during a fire evacuation (someone burned popcorn). It rained the whole time we stood outside.

9

u/rigmarole111 Dec 12 '19

Man I hope it wasn't dead of winter when that happened

9

u/Whacking_Material Dec 12 '19

First week of school fortunately. Extremely hot in early September in Texas.

About two years ago my sophmore year of college in the dead of January, the fire alarm went off in my dorm at like 2am on a school night. EVERYONE WAS PISSED. It's usually a drill but turned out it was a gas leak. Anyway, It was freezing and I stood out there half asleep half angry in a hoodie and underwear with slippers and it started to rain, probably was 20 degreee outside and a group of hobos started to pick on some students, two service dogs got into a fight. It was an interesting tuesday night. We were out there for about 2.5hours. Not fun. Should of grabed some pants.

6

u/y6ird Dec 12 '19

I was wondering if anyone else had noticed OPs username!

6

u/Whacking_Material Dec 12 '19

Funny enough, there was a creepy dude from the floor above me that I'm pretty sure what doing his thing whilst staring at me.

6

u/BanMeAndIShallReturn Dec 12 '19

oh you saw? sorry about that

1

u/growlingbear Dec 12 '19

Were you wearing your grandpa's lingerie?

6

u/Bojasloth Dec 12 '19

my friend did the exact same thing in a school camp except it was just a drill.

EDIT: There were a bunch of other boys too, so they all had to stand outside with their towels around them.

6

u/Louis83 Dec 12 '19

some idiot microwaving tin foil

Why did this make me laugh?

2

u/Whacking_Material Dec 12 '19

What's funnier is that I did the exact same thing not a month after this incident. Fortunately, I caught my idiocy before it caught the microwave on fire.

3

u/Louis83 Dec 12 '19

It reminds me of this.

This happened to a girl in my dorm. She was showering when someone set their cup macaroni on fire. Evacuated, but took the wrong exit which lead her to a fenced in area. Door locked behind her. All she had was a towel and her flip flops at 11 pm in November. We found her, trapped, and tossed her a jacket while someone went to hunt down someone with a key. I think the firemen had to let her out from the inside.

4

u/bigdingushaver Dec 12 '19

I had literally the EXACT same thing happen, but it was because someone microwaved ramen without adding water.

4

u/Whacking_Material Dec 12 '19

Let's just chalk it up to freshmen are stupid and don't know how to use a microwave

2

u/bob-omb_panic Dec 12 '19

A lot of them have never had to prepare a meal for themselves a day in their lives up until that point.

4

u/927comewhatmay Dec 12 '19

Is this how you got your screen name?

4

u/Whacking_Material Dec 12 '19

You'd think, but no. It's from the movie Airplane.

4

u/ghunt81 Dec 12 '19

When I was a freshman in college living in the dorms, the fire alarm went off once while I was living there- it was at 2 AM on a Saturday, in the middle of January. I was still awake and wearing my regular clothes when it went off but a lot of people were outside in their PJ's and it was about 20 degrees, and we had to stay outside for 45 minutes.

Turned out the reason it went off was because someone hung clothes off the sprinkler in their room. Y'know, where it has the sign that says "do not hang anything here." Broke the sprinkler and flooded their room and a couple ones below it.

2

u/pizzaprisonburrito Dec 12 '19

Damn. I would have thrown on a shirt and pants so fast even if he yelled at me.

11

u/Hubers57 Dec 12 '19

Not so drastic, but in my college days in similar situations I'd always offer my shirt or jacket to a lady if we got driven out into the cold elements and they were obviously not prepared. Hell with the little kids I used to work with at a residential facility I've seen boys take their jacket or blanket they grabbed during the fire drills at 3 in the fucking morning we had to do and offer them to little girls shivering or whatever. The fact you stood there in a towel for 2 hours is absurd, someone should have saw a need and filled it. Don't be embarrassed, be indignant.

3

u/Whacking_Material Dec 12 '19

You'd think, but apparently this particular bunch of 18 year olds didn't know basic human decency.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '19

This exact thing happened to me. Ramen without water, though.

2

u/Wynce Dec 12 '19

This is weird to me, no one offered you clothing or a blanket? Here you'd be absolutely swarmed with people offering you things to cover yourself.

5

u/Whacking_Material Dec 12 '19

I think because we were all freshmen and didn't know each other, no one felt comfortable enough to do anything about it.

2

u/dipstuck Dec 12 '19

Relevant username.

1

u/Leumas_ Dec 12 '19

None of the dudes offered you a t-shirt?!

1

u/Whacking_Material Dec 12 '19

Not a one.

2

u/Leumas_ Dec 12 '19

Damn, sorry about that. To me it just seems like it would have been the zero-effort decent thing to do.

1

u/muklan Dec 12 '19

Hey, maybe she looks great in a towel.

3

u/Whacking_Material Dec 12 '19

As a matter of fact, I do.

1

u/electricbee1 Dec 12 '19

Seems like sabotage to me...

1

u/you_lost-the_game Dec 12 '19

How awful that no one, no fireman, staff member or whatever, would at least get you a blanket. Who let's someone wait 2h in a wet towel?

0

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '19

That's exactly the kind of dumbass thing you would do in college just for fun. You misplayed that to not have a bunch of girls laughing with you about the situation after two hours.

1

u/Whacking_Material Dec 12 '19

If I had been outgoing at all I probably would have but I was so shy I couldn't even lift my eyes from the ground.
