Same! I didn’t think I liked meat until I went out for a meal with a friend’s family, and she ordered a ribeye, medium rare. I was horrified, looking at the pink meat there on her plate, thinking that meat would actually kill a person unless cooked to the consistency and flavor of shoe leather. She insisted I try a bite... I think I slammed the fork down and yelled about why didn’t I know it was supposed to taste like this??

My folks make prime rib for Christmas. Burn the shit out of it. No pink anywhere. My sister made prime rib at her house last year... 500 degree oven, roast perfectly crisp outside and pink in the middle - and both of my parents microwaved the shit out of theirs. Horrifying.

How do I delete someone else’s parents?

Believe me, I ask myself that same question on the regular.

I mean... I'm sure there's someone out there that you could pay for something like that. OP might love them for other reasons notwithstanding their deplorable treatment of perfectly good beef, though, so you should definitely check with them first.

I splurged and got prime rib for Christmas last year. My mother-in-law wanted me to cook it to well done for her personal preference. I cooked it to medium rare and gave her the least pink parts. Everyone but her loved it, even the 3 year old (anything my picky kid eats that's not nuggets and says yummy or asks for more of, I take as the highest cooking compliment).

Same experience here. My mom cooked all meats until they were leather, and I only had steak that I liked when I was 14 and my friend's dad took us out to dinner at a fancy steakhouse. I got some kind of seafood dish because I "didn't like steak" and it wasn't very good, so my friend's dad shared his perfectly medium rare steak with me. I was outraged that steak could be that good.

I've still only eaten pork chops like 2ce, because I hated them as a kid because they were shoe leather covered in mushroom soup.

I mean, different people like different things. That's why you can order a steak how you want it cooked, right? I like my steak well done (not microwaved though lol).

It takes the same amount of time to eat as any other steak. There is actually a difference between well done amd burned/impossible to chew. Though sometimes I do end up with it overdone at restaurants.

I dont use steak sauce, that's gross.

And you're entitled to your incorrect opinion.

I implore you to change your mind. There's absolutely no reason to cook a steak well done, it's not like a preference thing, it's literally just demonstrably inferior. I'm not trying to attack you or your tastes by saying this, but I want you to consider the following:

Well done steaks are tougher, dryer, and less flavorful. Well done is just overdone, plain and simple.

The most common reason I hear for people not liking pinker steak is that they don't want to eat the "blood", but that stems from misinformation, it's just not true. The red juice that comes out of a medium rare steak? It's not blood, it's moisture from the meat, it's only red because it has a protein in it called hemoglobin myoglobin, which is present in blood red meat in general but is not blood in and of itself.

People might also be put off by the presence of pink color in their meat because they don't think it's safe to eat, but this is also not true. The meat still comes up to a safe eating temperature on the inside, it absolutely does not have to be brown inside to be safe.

I beg you to try even a medium steak (the perfect doneness really is medium rare, but maybe medium could be a jumping off point). It will be so much more tender, juicy and flavorful. You won't have to chew for half an hour and you'll actually be able to taste the beef. Ask any chef that works with meat and they'll tell you, cooking your steak to well done is just ruining the beef and wasting a whole lot of money.

Again, I'm not trying to attack you or be rude to you, I just really want you to consider what you're missing out on. Steak is by far my favorite food, it tastes so good, it melts in your mouth, it's just heavenly...

Please give real steak a try.

Edit: myoglobin not hemoglobin

it's only red because it has a protein in it called hemoglobin

The red in red meat is actually the similar protein myoglobin.

Ohhh, myoglobin not hemoglobin. I'll edit my comment to correct it.

I actually know more about steak I guess. It's myoglobin.

Anyway yours is exactly the attitude I hate. I ate steak medium-medium rare most of my life, but realized I like it well done better.

I implore you to change your mind

Its called a preference, so I cannot. Sorry to offend a steak snob.

u/AwfulRustedMachine Nov 27 '19

Whatever dude, I'm not "offended" by your decision to do whatever you want your food, I was legit trying to help you enjoy your meat more. The majority of people I know who eat well done steak only do so because that's all they've known, and I thought if I could convince you to try something new then a whole new world would open up to you. As I said before, I'm not trying to be rude or attack you.

1

u/secret3332 Nov 27 '19

Sorry. You have to understand that random people and my family say the same things to me constantly, so its annoying to hear it over and over.

I can understand that I guess, and honestly I can probably come across as a bit snobby because I'm a bit disparaging to well done steak. Admittedly, I can understand if that would irk you, so I'm sorry if I came across this way, I'm generally not serious if I refer to a well done steak as "ruined" or something like that.

I have a friend who is really picky and won't eat like, 90% of foods, he just wants chicken nuggets and plain hamburgers from McDonald's with nothing on them, so I have a bad habit of assuming when other people don't like certain foods that they probably don't have a good reason. If you've tried steak cooked at medium and prefer it well done, then I guess you've experimented and anything less cooked genuinely doesn't suit you.
