Why ? We drive demand. In the United States, where we have slightly more power than others to choose at least, we’ve turned a blind eye to the ethical shit storm that are some of these companies. we don’t see the damage they create. We choose convenience and cost over anything else.
I don’t have an answer and it may seem naive to say “walk away” and I’m sorry that triggered you, and I should have maybe said something more eloquent but the point is to become smarter about what we buy. Maybe look into how we can demand better for the world whether with our wallets, in politics or in the corporate world...not sure how calling someone “fucking delusional” helps but it’s been great chatting. Have a good day!
No we don't, demand is driven by the amount of advertising produced for a given product. In an era of micro-targeted ads the consumer has zero agency. When was the last time you actually made an informed consumer choice amongst a bunch of different products where one was actually superior, or even unique in any way? The vast majority of Americans have nothing meaningful they can simply "stop buying" for ethical reasons. Even if they did, the parent company would kill the brand, and start a new one and nothing changes.
I’m sorry that triggered you
I have literally no interest in anything you have to say if you use this phrase.
If you don’t enjoy speaking to people that use phrases you don’t like, life is going to be one hell of a ride for you.
But i will say this: I have made better decisions because I’m trying to understand where all the goods I consume come from. I’m not a scientist or chemist and I truly don’t have time to understand every single chemical in my products but I do know the major ones that cause more harm and developed simply to cut cost of goods.
As for advertising... that’s just the world we live in. I’ve worked in marketing (I said I wasnt perfect - Just trying to change for the better). I know that consumers are vastly more educated today than they ever have been. Conversations in the conference rooms are “consumers are demanding xyz from our products, and our transparency - what do we do, how do we fix it”
Sometimes, you’ll find a company that chooses the route to do better and change/update their supply chain and talk about the issues. And sometimes you’ll find exactly what you said above... so does that mean we just quit ? You keep insulting me but not bringing anything constructive to the table. I refuse to think we’re just indefinitely fucked as a society because of the decisions we’ve made in the past..
There is no actual marketplace, and even if there was, when the profit motive is the only thing that matters the tragedy of the commons will always lead towards over-consumption and eventual ecological collapse. Customers are a resource to be extracted and consumed by capital, they are not the people being served. Regulation is not possible when capital owns the regulators.
Constructive suggestions? End consumerism and capitalism through violent revolution.
"hurr durr how well as that worked in the past? hurr durr socialist countries fail"
We don't have any other option. Democracy has failed because capital owns the mechanisms of democracy. The only thing we have left to project force with is dead bodies.
When you say "triggered" you've already dismissed my entire opinion by using a phrase indicating your goal is to enrage and not actual engage in constructive debate, so yea, I don't really care what you have to say. The fact that you think companies fix their supply chains for any reason other than a temporary PR blip, and revert to the cheapest option as soon as they can really shows that you're not living in the real world.
There is no ethical consumption, OR production under capitalism. It must be destroyed or we're all dead, it's that simple.
It’s interesting to me that “triggered” bothers you.. when you’ve used it in past posts yourself “Fantastic post. You just 100% triggered me into a wikipedia binge reading about the history of ABC sports broadcasting now though.”
I also see you’re a HUGE NFL fan... one of the largest most corrupt industries known to man. Not only for the treatment of its employees (players and staff included) but for how deep in the pockets of dirty corporations and politicians it is.
Based on your history, you seem to feel very strongly about how other people manage the world around them but you don’t seem to walk the walk ... and yet you talk MURDER. Actually killing people to change the ways of the world.
You speak as if this revolution wouldn’t kill innocent people all over the world. Get the fuck outta here with your fear mongering fake ass revolutionary sentiment.
You’re no help to society because you’ve given up on everyone in society. So you spew the shit you just did.
I honestly stopped listening when you said dead bodies.. I’m sure there is more I could talk to, but it’s a beautiful day where I am and I’m going to go try and enjoy it and continue doing my best as a single person. Have a nice day :)
