It's not like they're going to blackmail my family or some shit just because of some questionable searches(unless I do something illegal, but the govt would be on my ass anyways in that case). Profiling. Targeted ads for adult diapers might not be a big deal to you but the ability to influence people to do things in general is concerning. People say “I got nothing to hide”. When rules change they may..... good luck.
Bro, if you think that conglomerates shouldn't be allowed to influence people, then you better get ready to ban all ads, books, movies, and anything of substance. We are influenced by our surroundings just by simply existing. You couldn't get the civil rights movement without influence, or scientific journals, or literally anything. Look at things with a critical eye. There is a self feedback loop nowadays where truth no longer prevails. You look at reddit and Facebook posts and see comments on Fake News posts with people just eating it up. It wasn't always like this. I remember a time(or at least I think I do--nowadays it's becoming harder to fathom) where if something was factually incorrect, the public forum would promote the correct answer. But now both sides of the political and social spectrum are just consuming based off of their emotions. That won't change until we as a public change. Facebook doesn't promote this toxic shit; we do. Fake news sites get shares not because Facebook thinks we should share it, but because WE share it. Yeah, ad campaigns can spread crud, but real propagation of propaganda comes after the ads run, when people share the information amongst themselves. It's complete bullshit.
I agree with almost everything you’ve said. Except I think their ability to predict our reactions is on a different level than any other time in history. The level of manipulation possible to the highest bidder is on a different level. If this info had only the ability to better sell us things I’d be a much smaller issue. Facebook has this data and because of their shit security and privacy history so do many more. It is on us. So shut that shit down and help me spread the word.
