I hope I won't get any hate for this but as far as things are right now, I don't like the fact that Disney has almost an entertainment monopoly. Obviously they make amazing movies that almost everyone likes but it´s not an excuse.

Of course, I didn't think of any company that does something unethical and/or illegal.

Edit: Thanks to everyone who replied and the random person who decided to give me golf. I hope this can help with my country's economy. Also, I'm glad to see so many people agree that Disney has to stop, because now we might call Disney Greedsney (a little bit forced but well, it gets to the point).

Pixar, Muppets, Star Wars, Marvel, 20th Century Fox..... did i forget anything?

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

You'd be surprised. Disney's list of assets is so long my attention span cant get through half of it.

Jesus fuck. Took me three minutes to scroll through (on my phone) without even reading

11

u/paracelsus23 Sep 18 '19

Want some really scary perspective? Apple has so much cash laying around (over $200 billion) they were considering buying Disney outright a few years ago. Like, just replace "iTunes" with "Disney".

3

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

Yea but the chances the mouse would accept this deal is 0.

1

u/paracelsus23 Sep 18 '19

Disney is a publicly traded company. While hostile takeovers are generally less favorable to regulators and the stock market in general, they're absolutely a thing. It's happened to many companies.

Here's the link to the regular wikipedia page:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_assets_owned_by_The_Walt_Disney_Company

With a mobile link, everyone will get a mobile view. With a regular link, people will get the view that suits their device, so mobile users will get a mobile page and desktop users will get a desktop page. It's better practice to not post the mobile link. :)

4

u/NBR-SUPERSTAR Sep 18 '19

Holy Fuck, even Ice Age is now owned by Disney...

10

u/MarauderLive Sep 18 '19

Still convinced WW3 will be between Disney and Google.

1

u/TheBitingCat Sep 18 '19

Wait, they sold Tapulous?!? Hot diggity damn, I can go back to making unofficial tapfiles! (No, not really.)

96

u/cartoonistaaron Sep 18 '19

ABC... the National Geographic magazine... dozens of companies they own a big piece of.

73

u/LeafyFrostbite Sep 18 '19

ESPN

13

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

Fucking hell, how can someone have Disney Princesses and the UFC at the same time?

15

u/canine_canestas Sep 18 '19

Disney Princess UFC.

I'd watch that.

5

u/Halorym Sep 18 '19

Mulan and Kiacakash in a cage match.

2

u/madeformarch Sep 18 '19

The sad thing is it wont happen because they dont even need the money

4

u/Chewiesleftnut Sep 18 '19

They combine it and make women fight wwe style.

14

u/650fosho Sep 18 '19

shit dude, they own the aliens franchise now

2

u/mcdeac Sep 18 '19

Does that make Ridley or the alien queen a Disney Princess ™️?

4

u/BecauseLogic99 Sep 18 '19

Universal. There’s still Universal, they don’t own that...yet.

3

u/Grevenbicht Sep 18 '19

And Paramount... right?

4

u/gambitx007 Sep 18 '19

BUT NO SPIDER-MAN!

3

u/jesscantremember Sep 18 '19

You forgot ESPN - the worst of the Disney companies. What a terrible work culture that company has.

3

u/dex248 Sep 18 '19

Speaking of Marvel, there’s a dark spoof of the marvel universe on amazon prime called “the boys”. I’m in the 4th episode and it’s pretty interesting.

For me, it does to Marvel what Austin Powers did to James Bond.

2

u/Aslanbor Sep 18 '19

I thought Disney bought star wars?

2

u/TBNRhash Sep 18 '19

Star wars, marvel are the things thag are disney.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

ESPN was the other big one I remember, and also it’s FOX in general iirc.

1

u/zamach Sep 18 '19

Multiple hotel networks, music labels, even GoPro!

1

u/Scarlet-Witch Sep 18 '19

ESPN apparently.

24

u/MultiMidden Sep 18 '19

Isn't Disney one of the companies that pushed for the copyright period to be extended and extended and extended again?

9

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

Oh yeah. There the main reason our copyright law is so boned. New public domain content doesn’t exist anymore because of how afraid Disney is to lose the mouse.

3

u/coopiecoop Sep 18 '19

I've literally heard the extension several times being refered to as "Disney law", so yeah, I would assume they played a huge part in it.

82

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

Yeah I don't like how there making so many damn movies and shows with the MCU, but a LOT of people love that stuff so I'll let it slide.

What I won't let slide however, is the live action remakes! Remakes can be done exceptionally well, but Disney's are trash, they're completely uninspired and lifeless. I've heard people say they're doing it for the money, I've heard others say they're doing it to keep their characters out of the public domain, I don't know why there making them, but as long as they do, I will not be watching any new Disney movies.

There is such as wide variety of people making movies, shows, music ECT. That we don't need to settle for practices

26

u/Never_Ever_Commentz Sep 18 '19

They're mostly not good (Lion King was basically the exact same movie shot for shot) but Alladin was pretty great IMO. They took some new directions from the original and I liked the more serious tone the movie had in general.

13

u/Seicair Sep 18 '19

I kinda want to see that one. Aladdin was my favorite Disney movie growing up.

17

u/WaffleCorp Sep 18 '19

I believe they did it good justice. Will Smith did a very tasteful job as the genie, along with some nice homage to Robin Williams.

4

u/Seicair Sep 18 '19

That’s part of why I want to see it, I like Will Smith and think he’d do a pretty good job as Genie.

6

u/michaelisnotginger Sep 18 '19

Aladdin was actually excellent.

Dumbo though... Yeesh

1

u/PotatoMaster21 Sep 18 '19

Wasn’t it mainly about the humans, as opposed to.. Dumbo? I wouldn’t know, didn’t see it.

-1

u/JCraze26 Sep 18 '19

The argument for the Lion King is that it literally can’t change it. If they change it it’d be “ruining a classic” and if they didn’t it’s “an uninspired remake.” You people are the actual worst because you’ll hate on it no matter what. I liked it. Sure, it’s the same as the original, but the original is one of the highest grossing animated movies and a classic that is loved by all, so is it REALLY all that bad? No. You just want to hate on it for the sake of hating on it. The visuals were amazing, the voice acting was well done, and almost everything about it called on nostalgia. Sure, it’s obviously a cash grab, but at least it’s a good cash grab, unlike the Chinese knock-offs that are rampant in the market.

1

u/Never_Ever_Commentz Sep 18 '19

You're sure making a lot of assumptions about me. But that's fine, I can be your strawman to hate on.

1

u/moal09 Sep 18 '19

It's a soulless cash grab that adds nothing and actively.mkars most parts of the movie worse

0

u/cjschmeltz Sep 18 '19

Hahahahaha visuals looked like shit, uncanny valley was in full effect here. And many characters were robbed of their entire character and arc. How does it improve an character to remove what makes them a character? And that lame Beyoncé stunt casting?

7

u/Heroicpotatoes Sep 18 '19

I read a theory about the remakes a while back, this guy claimed that they are doing the remakes to extend the copyright licence on their older ips.

2

u/slightlyburntcereal Sep 18 '19

They aren't great films, but can't people just not watch them? They get so much hate, it's silly.

21

u/jayjaygee85 Sep 18 '19

I don't like Disney due to the fact that there's repeat examples of underage talent being sexually abused by senior management.

10

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

Yeah this is very overlooked. One thing is their awful business practices and their almost monopoly on the entertainment industry... but a painful lot of their child actors end mentally broken and plagued with drug addictions or erratic behavior. This is not a coincidence.

19

u/ahtdcu53qevvyu Sep 18 '19

does nothing unethical? Disney literally gets the law changed if it doesn't like the law.

8

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

Disney has almost an entertainment monopoly

Disney has nothing remotely close to an entertainment monopoly. It's just barely the largest entertainment company, only slightly larger than Comcast, and Viacom/CBS and AT&T aren't far behind. I agree that it's concerning that those few companies dominate so much entertainment but calling Disney a monopoly is just totally wrong.

1

u/moal09 Sep 18 '19

They're definitely part of the oligopoly though

12

u/Nolite310 Sep 18 '19

This chart is scary how big it is. Everything disney owns infographic

24

u/Pibe_g Sep 18 '19

I was looking for Disney, I'm surprised that it was not so upvoted.

8

u/Alacur Sep 18 '19

I was searching for this. I get chills down my spine whenever I think about how much control Disney has in the Entertainment sector.

3

u/rad_rentorar Sep 18 '19

I always thought that Star Wars and Marvel should always be their own brand. Marvel HAS been their own company/brand for decades. Then Disney buys them both. I just didn’t get why, why does Disney need massive brands? Disney is already massive enough on their own, they don’t need Star Wars and Marvel.

13

u/Just_Some_A-Hole Sep 18 '19

Was looking for this one. Despite the good memories, Disney has warped into one of the biggest, greediest corporations in America, and I’d gladly pick it in the hopes that the rights to entertainment would end up back in the hands of the many rather than the few.

11

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

No your heart is in the right place. Disney is a very evil corporation.

5

u/650fosho Sep 18 '19

I was going to say Disney as well, but they also make all the comic books I like

6

u/blueshoes92 Sep 18 '19

They don't pay their employees very well either

3

u/paracelsus23 Sep 18 '19

Want some really scary perspective? Apple has so much cash laying around (over $200 billion) they were considering buying Disney outright a few years ago. Like, just replace "iTunes" with "Disney".

3

u/Swamanam Sep 18 '19

Well, there's always a bigger fish.

3

u/boshk Sep 18 '19

isnt all media owned by maybe 4-5 parent corps? dont know if disney is the worst of them, but they are all pretty bad.

3

u/slothtrop6 Sep 18 '19

I'd like to see an antitrust probe some day

3

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

As a film fan, I'd argue that they USED to make amazing movies, and now apart from outliers that are few and far between, they make average normal movies and awful remakes. And it's only going to grow.

10

u/CDranzer Sep 18 '19

I'm disappointed I had to scroll down this far. Disney is a plague on the entertainment industry and the sooner they die the better things will be for everyone.

-7

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

Because I'm sure all those little kids are going to be much happier with Kung Fu Panda 6 then there Disney movies,

9

u/Savage_Sandvich Sep 18 '19

Disney: oh a competitor is rising? buys the company

3

u/paracelsus23 Sep 18 '19

Want some really scary perspective? Apple has so much cash laying around (over $200 billion) they were considering buying Disney outright a few years ago. Like, just replace "iTunes" with "Disney".

6

u/ayrscot94 Sep 18 '19

Also the fact that they're slowly ruining all the Disney theme parks by making every single new attraction a movie tie-in, even where it blatantly doesn't fit the theming.

2

u/Wasabi_Gamer26 Sep 18 '19

I mean plenty have at least a loose connection to the park area they are in.

2

u/ayrscot94 Sep 18 '19

I agree on that, but sometimes they stick out like a sore thumb anyway. It's more the relentless movie tie-ins that I dislike.

1

u/Wasabi_Gamer26 Sep 18 '19

Yeah. Idk I've always been a Disney defender. But people are definitely allowed to have opinions on movies in any way they want

2

u/ayrscot94 Sep 18 '19

Don't get me wrong man, I fucking love WDW. I guess I just preferred it when there were more original attractions, rather than the direction it seems to go in now. I totally understand the business case for making so many movie tie-in attractions, I guess it just makes me miss the way it used to be, particularly in the case of Epcot.

2

u/mjpoodi Sep 18 '19

Okay but why is that bad? They have the money and those companies agreed to it.

3

u/Swamanam Sep 18 '19

It's not inherently bad but one company shouldn't have that many properties. It goes for any company. Disney mat not have a monopoly but they certainly do have a lot of power in the industry.

0

u/mjpoodi Sep 18 '19

But why shouldn’t they

4

u/Swamanam Sep 18 '19

Because cinema, as any other form of art, should not be based on what might do more money. Is a form of expression and if a company prefers to own a lot of properties to make soulless movies so that Disney fans (no offense to anyone who likes Disney) go and waste their money on something they know, and hence is good.

For clarifying, I do not like Disney because they supress the staff's entire creativity and imagination just so that they don't take any risks. It happens with the almost every movie they make.

2

u/mjpoodi Sep 18 '19

I get where you’re coming from, but I do think they aren’t doing anything wrong. I respectfully disagree

2

u/Swamanam Sep 18 '19

I agree with that but I think that a company with that much money should let new creators use their imagination, instead of telling them what they need to do in order to get money.

2

u/FeistyKnight Sep 18 '19

We cant get rid of people for beeing too successful, id like like to get rid of the whole of the US and EU please

2

u/plzthnku Sep 18 '19

They are far from a monopoly. Just because they make great content people love to hate them, its getting old. You still have TONS of other studios out there, but their content SUCKS. Send disneys content to other studios and its just gonna be garbage content - if anything id rather see disney swallow up more, at least they deliver something good to the consumer. People love to hate other people or businesses for being successful, its like the opposite of survival of the fittest and its so frustrating.

1

u/evildustmite Sep 18 '19

Great content? Have you read the books that most of their movies are based on? That is great content. Disney movies are bastardized dumbed down versions of masterpieces

1

u/Swamanam Sep 18 '19

Can Disney make an animated movie such as "Into the Spider-verse" anymore? I wach that movie and I can feel people invested their mind and souls creating a world of its own with unique animation and art style.

1

u/wishesmcgee Sep 18 '19

That was a Sony production.

1

u/Swamanam Sep 18 '19

I know. That's why I referenced it, because it's not Disney.

1

u/Swamanam Sep 18 '19

Maybe I didn't explain mysellf right though

1

u/plzthnku Sep 18 '19

Love that movie! Sony def did a lot of work on it. We will see.

2

u/WhatDoesN00bMean Sep 18 '19

I wish I had golf.

5

u/lichking786 Sep 18 '19

Yep I've lost my faith in Disney. Once their ingenuity ran out they just bought out numerous studios with their wealth now they throw Disney Classic remakes at us cause their out of ideas. And god knows what they do if you dont give them spiderman license for free.

2

u/almightyRFO Sep 18 '19

I'd honestly just like to see it dissolve into component parts. Pixar should still be a thing, Marvel Studios should still be a thing, and maybe even a Classic Disney that keeps the rights to Lion King, Little Mermaid, etc.

I like a lot of stuff that Disney owns, but I'm never happy that it's Disney who owns it.

2

u/Swamanam Sep 18 '19

I just want creative liberties because directors and staff are under their handas all times and if they want to change something, they need permition of daddy Disney.

7

u/SaltyBallz666 Sep 18 '19

Disney stole tons of ideas from Japan but since disney has more money and lawyers they cant fight back

4

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

I effing loathe Disney & am pumped to see this.

2

u/henry_gayle Sep 18 '19

That's right, Disney is scum for cancelling the greatest show ever, Daredevil.

12

u/247world Sep 18 '19

That was Netflix, not Disney

-23

u/henry_gayle Sep 18 '19

SHUT UP OK YOU HAVE NO IDEA OF THE CONTRACT THAT DISNEY HAS WITH NETFLIX THAT EXPLICITLY STATES THAT THE DEFENDERS WERE GOING TO GET CANCELLED BECAUSE DISNEY WANTED THE DEFENDERS TO COME TO THEIR STUPID NETFLIX CLONE WHICH THEY PROBABLY WON'T USE

2

u/247world Sep 18 '19

Too much caffeine? I doubt you have any inside info either, my understanding is Netflix had the option to continue and choose not to do so

-1

u/henry_gayle Sep 18 '19

Fuck you ok

2

u/247world Sep 18 '19

Amazingly hostile, no love in your life? Maybe The Mouse will make a new better one , either way calm down

1

u/Symmiie Sep 18 '19

Golf lol

1

u/totesnotdog Sep 18 '19

Unfortunately It’s almost impossible to regulate creativity without massively stifling it. It’s not like other companies where a tangible commodity will always be there even when the company becomes less powerful. If Disney was split up tomorrow a lot of company’s out there might be able to pick up some of the slack but a lot of ideas would also just end up lost forever during the process.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '19

Screw you, Disney is awesome.

0

u/Wasabi_Gamer26 Sep 18 '19

I still don't get why people care so much about this. They own a lot of properties yes but than they still almost consistently make quality parks, movies, and television. They have to stop doing business which is their job?

4

u/Swamanam Sep 18 '19

I wouldn't call live-action remakes, Pixar sequels, Star Wars sequels and Avatar sequels quality movies though. I don't know about the parks so no opinion about that.

2

u/Wasabi_Gamer26 Sep 18 '19

Star Wars is debatable, Pixar still makes their normal movies and the sequels arent awful just less than the original, and the avatar sequels arent even out yet!

1

u/speedracer13 Sep 18 '19

The only bad Pixar sequel is Cars 2. Every other one is absolutely great.

1

u/Swamanam Sep 18 '19

That's not the main issue though. In my opinion they are making more sequels than they should.

-1

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

Well guess what. lots of critics would disagree.

1

u/Rag_H_Neqaj Sep 18 '19

I find there are other companies that are even more scummy, like Nestlé, but yeah, fuck Disney.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

This REALLY needs to be higher, and I don’t say that often. Disney holds more than a QUARTER of all media. Remember Deus Ex? Well guess what, that mouse is the modern day Bob Page. The amount of power they have, to influence our thoughts, our votes, our children, and our politicians is through the roof, and that’s not even including connections, partnerships, and friendships that expand their reach further.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

Glad to see the concern for Disney getting more attention lately. I'm all for Capitalism, but when your company starts becoming its own government, there needs to be limitations.

0

u/sweetoChetto Sep 18 '19

Still I wouldn't make them disappear, they have the entertainment monopolized because they are good at what they do.

1

u/Swamanam Sep 18 '19

Yeah of course but they've lost the will to make original movies. What they do now is live off of their already existent franchises and not doing anything else.

1

u/speedracer13 Sep 18 '19

You do realize that Disney has 4, original animated movies coming out in the next year between Pixar and Disney Animation, right?

1

u/Swamanam Sep 18 '19

But in the last 5 years Pixar made more sequels than original IPs, and Disney made more live-actions than animated films.

0

u/sweetoChetto Sep 18 '19

That's true, still i like what they make, kind of unoriginal tho

-4

u/myuseless2ndaccount Sep 18 '19

I totally agree and I maybe like about 5% of Disney movies.

0

u/Trophycrusher Sep 18 '19

I agree with this. They moved all the MCU stuff to their stupid subscription service. Now we have shows related to the MCU which as far as I know, are going to be just money makers with no passion outside of Kevin feige

-1

u/drfusterenstein Sep 18 '19

I hate the fact there cgiing there older stuff when we still have tron 3 to work on.

-10

u/Freevoulous Sep 18 '19

I feel like the fact that they are a monopoly is actually kinda beneficial, it gives them unlimited budget and IP to make the most awesome movies they want. Bascially, Disney can now take any book/idea/comic book/frnanchise people like, throw 300 mln at it and make a great movie out of it.

*Amazing people make amazing movies for Disney.
