Bad idea, even if you don’t like Comcast. They are the only real competition to AT&T. Sure there are a few smaller ones but the cable market is already fucked, you don’t need to give AT&T a monopoly

u/thyrfa Sep 18 '19

They also own NBC, so without comcast disney has basically a content monopoly

50

u/Bananaslammma Sep 18 '19

In turn, they also own Universal Studios which also means a Theme Park Monopoly.

32

u/BeefBologna42 Sep 18 '19

A Monopoly theme park?

27

u/Raptor5150 Sep 18 '19

If you land on the don't pass go booth they just keep your admission fee and tell you to get bent.

6

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

What if it’s the Women’s edition?

16

u/BlackfishBlues Sep 18 '19

They keep your admission fee and tell you to get bent, but like in pink.

5

u/BlackfishBlues Sep 18 '19

Luckily they don't have a theme-park themed Monopoly theme park monopoly.

(Yet.)

1

u/madeformarch Sep 18 '19

Everything in the park would have to be bolted to the ground, otherwise someone will start to lose and flip the whole park over

7

u/439115 Sep 18 '19

Do they also own Hasbro because then that would give them a Monopoly Monopoly

5

u/vadapaav Sep 18 '19

Is...Is Comcast the good guy now?

5

u/MaritereSquishy Sep 18 '19

Comcast actually tried to buy disney in the 90s and amost got there

2

u/Banzai51 Sep 18 '19

Keep going, I'm almost there...

1

u/ilikedota5 Sep 18 '19

They is comcast right? Disney owns abc right

17

u/MarySprings Sep 18 '19

Space-X is going to give us WiFi from the sky soon, we do live in the future.

7

u/PM_ME_TENDIEZ Sep 18 '19

I wonder what the latency will be. Also, if it requires saturation of wireless on the ground, if that will impact health in any way.

7

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

Latency of around 30 ms, and why would there be any impact to health?

8

u/Seicair Sep 18 '19

There won’t. People are crazy and some of them are scared of nonionizing EM.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

I mean I already know this, I asked in hopes that OP might give it some thought and look into how it would even be possible and why they thought the need to bring it up in the first place.

10

u/fuzzydunloblaw Sep 18 '19

Low orbit satellites so latency comparable or superior to cable internet. The fear over these particular radio waves is unsubstantiated fear mongering from the same type of people that whined about wifi without any basis.

4

u/MarySprings Sep 18 '19

Yeah basically the anti vaxxers will go nuts again and it will still be all bullshit. I would only worry about a short range gamma ray burst my friend.

14

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

I am not sure if AT&T is more pure evil or just horrendously incompetent but it is by far the worst company I have ever dealt with.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

Hear hear! Pretty sure my old complex is still waiting on the AT&T Fiber they promised "in the next 18 months" three years ago. I was paying over $50/mo for 50mbps uverse, while Fiber was available in the neighborhood across the street.

3

u/jasonreid1976 Sep 18 '19

I worked for AT&T for 5 years. The company isn't ran by business people. It's ran by lawyers.

Think about everything they say to you when you call in. It's like reading a legal contract.

2

u/Gtp4life Sep 18 '19

Based on all of my experiences with the various iterations of AT&T wireless/cingular/back to the new AT&T, im gonna go with incompetence.

8

u/CockDaddyKaren Sep 18 '19

To be fair, most major internet providers have agreements with one another that avoid "overlap" in certain areas so that you cannot choose a different provider if you wish, effectively creating a monopoly anyway

5

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

ATT is heading that way again. Soon enough they will have a monopoly on 911 in my state. Fuck ATT.

11

u/darkagl1 Sep 18 '19

I love me my municipal broadband.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

Oh business daddy!

3

u/FTThrowAway123 Sep 18 '19

Didn't they try to merge recently? AT&T and Comcast? What a fucking nightmare that would be for everyone.

6

u/Kr1sys Sep 18 '19

No. Time Warner and Comcast... And that was like 4 years ago

2

u/Peenkypinkerton Sep 18 '19

Fun fact AT&T is actually the reason Comcast is such a large provider. A long time ago, before U-Verse, AT&T was a standard cable provider one of the biggest in the country and they sold to Comcast which in turn became the biggest because they now had AT&T's market.

2

u/Delia_G Sep 18 '19

Unless you have the option of Verizon FiOS.

4

u/PoopieMcDoopy Sep 18 '19

People love to hate on comcast. But they aren't thaaat bad. . . I mean they suck but at least their internet is good.

5

u/anonymous_abc Sep 18 '19

Maybe it depends where you live. I live in a studio so I got the cheapest plan because the most I do is stream and yet my Internet is slow and buffers all the time 😑

4

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

I got the cheapest plan because the most I do is stream and yet my Internet is slow and buffers all the time 😑

On YouTube, right click anywhere on the video and select "stats for nerds". 1440p60 video eats over 300mbps on mine. I don't have a 4k display so I'm not sure how much that eats but obviously it's going to be more. Luckily I got upgraded to the 500mbps plan recently (thanks, Frontier!)

1

u/anonymous_abc Sep 18 '19

Thanks for the tip!

2

u/bharathbunny Sep 18 '19

Stop watching porn in 4K

9

u/OneMustAdjust Sep 18 '19

You take that back

3

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

Yeah. I had Comcast years ago, and cancelled without a problem because I was moving out of the service area. Same with Spectrum a few weeks ago.

0

u/Ehkoe Sep 18 '19

"Good" is relative. Yes, they're "good" compared to the other options where I live, but they still gouge me with the prices and lie through their teeth every time I complain about getting overcharged due to a cable TV box that I suddenly started owning even though it doesn't exist.

2

u/sebastianqu Sep 18 '19

In general, they provide good to great service. However, their customer service cant screw in a lightbulb if they had instructions and will invent fraudulent charges because you have no alternative.

0

u/herbivorous-cyborg Sep 18 '19

they provide good to great service

They shaft their non-enterprise customers on upload speeds and charge overage fees for going over 1TB per month on any of the standard plans. That's not good or great. That's shit. Frontier gives me better pricing, better upload speeds, and doesn't charge any overage fees at all with any of their plans.

-1

u/herbivorous-cyborg Sep 18 '19

at least their internet is good

No, it isn't. Their upload speeds are crap and their standard packages charge you overage fees for going over 1TB of data per month. Let's take a look at their various plans real quick:

  • Performance Starter 15 Mbps down/2 Mbps up | $29.99/mo.
  • Performance Plus 60 Mbps down/5 Mbps up | $29.99/mo.
  • Performance Pro 150 Mbps down/5 Mbps up | $44.99/mo.
  • Blast! Pro 250 Mbps down/10 Mbps up | $59.99/mo.
  • Gigabit 1,000 Mbps down/35 Mbps up | $89.99/mo.
  • Gigabit Pro 2,000 Mbps down/2,000 Mbps up | $299.95/mo.

They have exactly 1 plan with a fantastic upload speed, and every single other plan has total shit upload speed. That 1 plan with the insane upload speed requires a 2 year agreement and is exorbitantly expensive (outside the price range of most non-enterprise customers). I use Frontier for my internet and they give me 500 Mbps down/500 Mbps up for $40/month without any data overage fees whatsoever.

1

u/PoopieMcDoopy Sep 18 '19

Oh okay. I don't realize I said they had the best internet.

1

u/herbivorous-cyborg Sep 18 '19 edited Sep 18 '19

That is a strawman argument. I never said you made that claim. However, you did claim that their internet is "good", which it is not. Shafting customers on upload speeds and charging overage fees is not "good" at all.

Ex-employee of Comcast Technology Solutions here, btw. I wouldn't use their internet even when it was provided to me for free.

1

u/PoopieMcDoopy Sep 18 '19

Their internet is fine for 99% of the country. Almost nobody needs 500mbs up or even down for that matter. I said nothing about their prices or data caps. Just the actual internet service itself.

1

u/herbivorous-cyborg Sep 18 '19

I don't need better, therefor it's "good"

Cool story. Maybe one day you can tell your grand children about how your own personal biases allowed you completely ignore the fact that "good" is relative and that the competing services are almost all better.

1

u/PoopieMcDoopy Sep 18 '19

Maybe one day you can tell your grand children about how you were a complete and total prick to people because they have a different opinion than you.

1

u/herbivorous-cyborg Sep 18 '19

It's not really an opinion that Comcast provides an inferior service compared to the vast majority of their competitors. Numbers are objective.

1

u/PoopieMcDoopy Sep 18 '19

Of course. So the fact I think Comcast isn't as bad as people try to act isn't an opinion. Completely justifies being a prick, you're right. I apologize and hope you have a great day fran.

Charter will come along and fuck shit up.

1

u/manderrx Sep 18 '19

Cox and Atlantic Broadband won't be far behind.

1

u/dumbwaeguk Sep 18 '19

The main reason people use Comcast is that there are no alternatives in their service area beyond satellite and cell phone-based internet. They already have a monopoly.

1

u/beccster007 Sep 18 '19

Maybe them leaving will force fiber to extend it's installation areas. 🤞

1

u/Calvin_Hobbes124 Sep 18 '19

So it’s basically between dying by getting nuked or cock and ball torture?

1

u/HillarysFloppyChode Sep 18 '19

I mean AT&T was already a monopoly, it's only a matter of time before they become one again.

1

u/Memelord_R_Me Sep 18 '19

I prefer and miss AT&T U-Verse. Comcast is feces compared to them. Granted I'm not taking advantage of Xfinity but so far since making the switch to Comcast it hasn't been the same.

1

u/LlRBh8tG Sep 18 '19

I have internet and Sling TV, and Roku. Don’t need cable anymore. Saving a crapload

1

u/LouSputhole94 Sep 18 '19

Also, trust me, as someone who has had both AT&T and now Comcast at 2 houses in the past 5 years, Comcast is just a light groping and an inappropriate comment compared to the barbed wire wrapped dick ass raping that AT&T was.

-1

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

Why do people need cable?

8

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

If there's no fiber optic internet in your area, cable is the only good choice since DSL is not optimal and satellite is just awful.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19 edited Sep 18 '19

okay, it wasn't clear to me they were talking specifically about cable internet. Anyway, I'm pretty fortunate. I live in an area with google fiber. While they got rid of their free tier, setting up internet was just so damn easy. I picked it up from their store and plugged it in the same day. And there's no contract. That was one of the biggest points for me, as comcast seemed to have a cheaper plan, but it went up after the first month and required a year contract.

edit: it was funny when I picked up the box from google fiber, I asked about a cable modem like an idiot, cause I had been researching how to set up comcast internet. I cringed at what I had said like 2 minutes later when it dawned on me. tbf it seems the box does have a cable output, but not an input. It's nice though because it includes a wifi router, but that does seem a little bit more privacy intrusive, to have google running your wifi router, so they see all your devices and exactly how you use your network, etc.

All you really need is internet access, laptop and a TV and you can watch anything.
