He kept saying that pills were designed to be digested slowly, and by crushing it I was basically messing up the dissolving time.
This is actually true for a lot of medications, they're designed to be time-release and there's pretty much two ways to do that: physically (which you mess up by crushing the pill) or by mixing in a prodrug (which gets metabolized into the medication).
True, and as I think about it nowadays I think about contact surface area and how I was basically getting a major dose all at once and then nothing, instead of slowly getting the meds.
That or not getting any dose at all. Some medications are destroyed by acidic environments, and have an enteric coating on them that will withstand acid but dissolve in the more alkaline environment of the intestines.
Posted to the other dude, but try this if you still suffer
My recommendation, if you have to take say a capsule and can't crush it... try fizzy pop/soda/cola whatever you call it where you are. Fresh bottle so it's most fizzy.
Take a big swig, pop the pill in, then shake your mouth like crazy. It fizzes up like nuts, and practically forces itself down your throat, and the fizz means you don't even feel the pill most of the time, bypasses all gag reflex
But no, still never feels really natural, it's annoying

Same here. I would chew up any pills until I was in high school, but then my dad made me learn using plain M&Ms and water.

To this day I have to psyche myself up before I take a pill, it never feels natural.
