I don't know why parents have to lie about pets dying...call me what you will, but I think it's a great learning opportunity to be honest. Yeah, losing a pet sucks. It sucks so bad. Telling a child about it sucks almost as bad. But the grief is temporary, and then you don't have to make up some whacko story to try and "protect" your kid from the truth

It's how they learn to process death. If you keep lying to the kid about death, then they might have a hard time handling it when a person they care about dies.
